according to recent reports via “the hill“…

More than 20 states are actively reducing or considering cutting back on their funding of programs helping people access HIV medications, as federal funding fails to keep up with the costs, according to a new report.

The report from the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD) found that 23 states, including Washington D.C., are implementing or considering cost-containing measures of their AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAP). This report was based on data from 44 states and territories.

The report said the federal funding has remained unchanged for more than decade, while demand and costs are increasing.

“Federal funding for ADAPs has remained relatively unchanged over the last decade, while client enrollment and healthcare costs, including prescription drug, insurance premium, and cost-sharing expenditures, have continued to increase,” the report stated.

ADAPs are federally funded assistance programs that provide assistance in the form of medication and other HIV-related services to low-income, uninsured and underinsured individuals with HIV.

Measures that states are implementing include lowering financial eligibility and bringing back waitlists or reducing their drug formularies, which dictate which drugs they cover. The report found 17 states and Washington, D.C. are actively seeking to constrain ADAP costs while the rest are still considering their options.

and according to the “ny times”:

The states, led by both Democrats and Republicans, are tightening requirements for people benefiting from Ryan White AIDS Drug Assistance Programs, or ADAPs, according to an analysis released on Monday by the health research group KFF.

The programs help pay for H.I.V. medications or provide them free to some people, and pay insurance premiums for others.

The biggest change took effect in Florida on Sunday, when officials cut off benefits for at least 16,000 residents living with H.I.V. The state also will no longer cover Biktarvy, the most widely prescribed H.I.V. medication.

On Friday, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services opened a special enrollment period allowing Floridians who lose financial support for insurance premiums to choose a new plan. The period ends April 30.

ADAPs support roughly 25 percent of the 1.2 million people living with H.I.V. in the United States. The programs had a 30 percent surge in enrollment from 2022 to 2024, in part because states were removing people from Medicaid after keeping them on during the pandemic.

“This is really an economic disaster, a public health disaster, a moral disaster,” said Esteban Wood, director of advocacy and legislative affairs at the advocacy group AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

so they are basically saying HIV medication will be a luxury drug.
i am absolutely disgusted that everything has come to this.

i’m not even joking when I font that if this happens,

there are people who depend on that medicine,
as well as health insurance that covers other illnesses.
everything is being set up that if we ain’t rich,

i was literally laying down and said to myself:

“God,
WTF did i do to be thrown into this timeline of chaos and doom?”

…because i don’t get it.
i pray this is another one of these situations that will resolve itself quickly.
