Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is proposing direct payments of $1,200 per person and $2,400 for couples amid the coronavirus outbreak, according to a copy of the legislation obtained by The Associated Press.

The GOP leader was poised to unveil the sweeping response Thursday as Congress raced to draft a $1 trillion measure to shore up for households and the U.S. economy.

Among key elements would be the direct payments to Americans, aligned with the Trump administration’s push for quick cash aid.

Under McConnell’s proposal, the minimum payments would be $600, and aid would be phased down at income thresholds of $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 per couple. 

Additionally, there would be $500 payments for each child.

i can see some of ya’ll before you go to the bank now:

1,200 isn’t bad.
that can cover most folks bills these days.
i’m waiting to hear the “gotcha” about this free money.
they need to suspend all rent and mortgage.
we don’t know how long the rona will last.
how it’s looking tho,
we might be in this for a while.
i’m not gonna give trump too much props but i’ll allow it.

  1. Yeah I won’t see a dime. Just tried to file for unemployment in Texas. I can’t even log onto the website because I forgot my username (I don’t file for unemployment often). Even though I have the right email address the site is telling me to call for assistance. When I call for assistance a voice recording says to go to the website. I’m not surprised. I didn’t get any help after Harvey because I technically had a job and needed to leave my job and go look for a new job in order to satisfy the Republican desire to make sure no lazy people get a helping hand. I’m not lazy but the more restrictions you put in place to stop fraud and abuse, the more people who need help fall through the cracks.

    I know I won’t get any of this $1200. I always fall through the cracks. There is always a snafu. I guess I need to start packing my bags and prepare for an eviction when it finally comes.

  2. I just hope Americans start to have a real conversation about Universal Basic Income (and how it would ACTUALLY be paid for).

    It’s about damn time we demand that our government start working for us. No need to shoot down free healthcare and college for regular citizens but be perfectly content with Congress handing trillions to irresponsible corporations and funding new oil campaigns.

    What about people on public assistance?
    Everyone should be getting help because when your home all day and kids home from school u eat more.
    Alot of people are going hungry daily.

    1. I agree. Everyone should be getting help. Congress has no issue throwing taxpayer money at corporations (paying little to no taxes) when they come with their hands out after spending their cash buying back stocks. I want my check dammit.

  5. 45 ain’t done ish yet but I hear you. Obama’s advisor Jason Furman came up with the idea back in 2008-9 & did it then, the GOP and Dems in the Senate supported it before 45 got on the train & the Dems in the House still have to agree to this. Other Dems in the Senate (Booker, Bennet, and Brown) are calling for $4500 per person, and even with this the country’s still in freefall. 45 doesn’t deserve jack since he’s jacked everything up, in just 3 1/2 years when it took George W. Bush 8. That’s a record. But people can use the $1200 or $4500 (even better) so I hope it happens & 45 talks to his crazy GOP gang who screw up everything they get their hands on.
