Jussie Smollett’s brother staunchly defended the actor in an op-ed that provided insight into how Smollett wanted to handle the alleged attack — and how it has affected him since.
In a piece for BET, Jojo Smollett wrote that his brother is an “exceptional individual” whose character on the show “’Empire’ represents much of who he is and has given voice to people who have been historically marginalized.”
Jojo disputed claims that his brother staged the attack for a financial gain or more press. He noted that Jussie was involved in a slew of projects, “all pointing to not only an advancing career but a business savvy mind.”
“To suggest that he staged his own attack to boost a sagging career is ludicrous,” he wrote.
The piece, entitled “What if Jussie is telling the truth?” and published Saturday, also alleged that Jussie “didn’t even want to contact the police.”
“He was weary and didn’t care for the unnecessary attention it might garner. His choreographer insisted, and the choreographer contacted the police himself,” Jojo wrote.
He claimed that his brother now suffers mentally.
“Jussie is as strong as iron, but following an attack like this, there is a normal and natural amount of post-trauma that mostly anyone should expect to suffer,” Jojo wrote. “I have literally seen him violently awakening from night terrors, following the assault. Some of my siblings, as well as Jussie’s partner and closest friends have seen similar things.”
The op-ed ends with a plea from Jojo to the public.
“I am simply hoping there are some conscious-minded people out there who, instead of carelessly victim blaming and shaming, want to loudly ask the simple question: ‘What if Jussie is telling the truth?’”

Jussie will rebound because time heals all wounds as they say. I’m concerned with the reasoning behind all of this attack madness more than anything. I love Jussie, God knows I do, well accept that chipmunk singing voice.

Exactly, to a narcissist, all press is good press. They will do any and everything to keep their names on people’s minds.After all this back and forth in the courts, Jussie lost out on the lead role of a Broadway play that he was in the running for, about a gay hate crime victim because of all the bad press around him and I just find it interesting that his brother put this PR piece out there around the same time. Just like narcissist sociopath R Kelly called Gayle King for a one on one interview to “clear his name” and just like narcissist sociopath Trump keeps having these pep rallies for his MAGA cult, Jussie is clearly showing signs of narcissistic sociopath behavior, even as far as convincing his brother to put out this PR piece.
They trying to milk the hell out of this situation that people stop carrying about weeks ago. go somewhere and hide out. but Jessie want do because he feel he’s that damn important when he’s not.

All I got from it is Jussie probably didn’t want to get the police involved because it was staged and he wanted to just use the incident for attention.
I’m happy JoJo wrote this essay.JoJo is his big brother ,he is not in show business.He is going out of his comfort zone to support his brother.I’m happy Jussie has family and friends that support him and aren’t afraid to speak up.
Lastly I look forward to see Jamal and Kai’s wedding this week on Empire.Jussie was excited about this wedding of these two black male characters on primetime tv.He wanted Jamal to have a black partner,he wanted HIV to be introduced into the storyline.These things were very important to him and just two more reasons I don’t believe he concocted a hoax.And as I said before I haven’t seen any evidence that he did.If I see some evidence I will admit I was wrong.
I have been reading about 15 year old Nigel Shelby, a beautiful black gay boy who killed himself 3 days ago in Alabama due to anti gay bullying.I will be thinking about him and 9 year old Jamel Myles who killed himself last year due to anti gay bullying.And all those boys and girls who killed themselves who sadly didn’t live long up to grow up and fall in love and get married. RIP
The news about Nigel Shelby and James Myles and all our other young Black and brown LGBTQ folks who are pushed over the brink by homophobic and transphobic bullying is something we should pay more attention to. They need our love and support just as we badly need to give love and support to and share both with each other.
Jussie is a mentally deranged individual.( almost evil because these people do these kind of things intentionally) I have known people like him who on the outside seem normal, attractive , intelligent and can conceal their undercurrent mental /evil/Craziness.

Bingo! Hit it right on the head! I be telling folks all the time about how sociopaths and narcissists operate. Most folks don’t recognize the signs until they become victims of one.They’re always very charismatic, friendly, and fun but that’s to lure people in, then, once they got you infatuated and hooked, this dark side comes out. Its the same thing Donald Trump and R.Kelly do to their fans and cult worshipers. You can talk to those MAGA people or R Kelly stans until youre blue in the face,and they will fight you tooth and nail to defend and protect their idols. I know from personal experience, I dated a few narcisstic sociopaths in the past,at first, all of them seem charismatic, friendly, nice people on the surface until you really get to know them and by that time, you’re in too deep and blaming yourself and hoping that the idealized version of this person you once knew will one day return. But they never do. I dated one narcissist sociopath for four years and they would have killed me if I didn’t break away in time, like no joke. I probably would not be here posting this if I stayed in that relationship. They tend to have substance abuse/ addiction issues and prefer processed foods like McDonalds. So yeah, didnt mean to go on a tangent, but I agree with everything you said as I see all the signs when I look at the case of Jussie Smollet. Just my 2 cents.

Many men who are as you described suffered abuse and bullying as children. We need to talk about mental health more and use less “crazy” terminology.

Mental health is an issue Black and Brown folks across the sexuality spectrum,need to start embracing and paying attention to. Just like a broken leg, a broken heart or mind will only get worse if not treated and healed. Especially when it comes to domestic violence and abusive relationships, most Black and Brown men of LGBTQ experience put up with it and/or do not seek help and/or have no access to resources to get help. I know when I had finally decided to get a restraining order against that abusive ex who tried to kill me, all the domestic violence resources that the local police station put me in touch with were 99% geared towards women.
