When Aunt Patti allegedly outed Luther,
big and little “Loo-Fah”,
the black community was not having it.

say what you want about us,
but we CAN protect our unproblematic legends,
especially when it comes to their personal lives.
you see how fast we stood up to protect tevin campbell.
outing has always been a tricky game.
let a male be attractive,
and suddenly,
there’s a full-blown witch hunt into his sexuality.
straight jackals,
who claim to “hate that gay shit”,
sure do love spilling “that gay shit“.
enter comedian godfrey,
who decided to put not one but two beloved tv dads on blast…
…with the casual confidence of someone who had zero business speaking on it.
“Yeah…
Yeah…
he gay,” he said,
like he was delivering the weather.

one of our TV dads has long since gone home to glory,
the other still very much alive and minding his business.
neither confirmed nor denied anything…
So why the sudden urge to air them out?
there’s a difference between kitchen table talk and telling someone’s story before they could.
as we should,
the black community has it’s foot in godfrey’s tail and rightfully so.
moral of the story?
If it ain’t your truth to tell,
keep it cute or at least make it a blind item.
amateurs.

fuck godfrey.
let’s play our TV dad’s theme songs:
i love how i can sing and rap all these songs without missing a beat.
lowkey: straight males have been acting so gay recently and i love it.
I’m a little conflicted about this, because what is the proper etiquette, especially when it comes to the dead? Are the dead entitled to secrets and privacy?
Luther Vandross died in 2005 (20 years ago), Whitney Houston died in 2012 (13 years ago), Michael Jackson died in 2009 ( 16 years ago), and James Avery died in 2013 (12 years ago). I point out when these people died because at what point is it okay to have an honest conversation about someone when they’ve passed away, especially if they were a public figure? When people got mad at Patti LaBelle for outing Luther, I really didn’t understand on one hand because Luther has been dead for 20 years. Who are you protecting at a certain point?
In the case of James Avery, I didn’t know he was gay and don’t care if he was gay. It doesn’t change how I see/saw him or change the mark he made in the entertainment industry. When it comes to Reginald VelJohnson, on the one hand, it’s wrong because he should be able to tell his own story since he is still alive, but he also already got outed because of the Diddy scandal, and people lowkey confirmed the rumors.
When it comes to Godfrey, I would love to know the context of the interview and what brought up the conversation. When I first saw the clip, I was uncomfortable because it felt a little disrespectful, the misgendering as a joke just fell flat, and it just feels like James Avery didn’t really deserve that.
I guess it’s safe to say most of the sitcom heavyweights from that era were good actors (Jeffersons, Family Matters, Fresh Prince etc…). When watching the shows we didn’t care who the actors were sleeping with in real life. As long as we were entertained.
The “interviewer” is very homophobic saying Uncle Phil was “playing games”. Why does it matter to you?
I’m disappointed in Godfrey. It’s terrible enough outing someone after their death, but the actor who played Carl Winslow is still alive and BOTHERS NOBODY. This is disrespectful and he has no respect for his elders.
The fact he did this says:
1) I am irrelevant
2)I want some attention going viral because I’m not viral-worthy
Nobody mentions Godfrey as a top Black comedian. I can’t name any Godfrey comedy specials.
He is miserable. And to think I had a crush on him after seeing him shirtless in Phat Girlz.
Him saying they were “old school gays”, he doesn’t realize how much of his OWN tea he spilled. Let me go see if he’s married.
While we’re all wondering why this was a topic, it’s also old news. Who asked about Uncle Phil or officer Winslow? Please let Carl Winslow mind his business and get his checks.
Godfrey is a walking talking example of someone whos got issues…and everyone clearly sees it. Clocked him LONG ago tho and hes very messy with that big ass mouth (hes swallowing “sumpthin”). Just back track and search it for yourself. I used to love him.
People like Godfrey are the main ones who are struggling with inner demons!! TBT I think Godfrey is gay, no matter how masculine he looks.
He’s 55 and not married.
What was the point of this? He just wanted to make a headline
I saw this and wondered what prompted the direction this took.
