The family of late “True Blood” actor Nelsan Ellis says the actor was attempting to withdraw from alcohol leading up to his death on Saturday.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Ellis’s family — via his manager Emily Gerson Saines — said they were prompted to share the details of the 39-year-old’s death in hopes of helping others struggling with addiction.
“Nelsan has suffered with drug and alcohol abuse for years. After many stints in rehab, Nelsan attempted to withdraw from alcohol on his own,” the statement said. “According to his father, during his withdrawal from alcohol he had a blood infection, his kidneys shut down, his liver was swollen, his blood pressure plummeted, and his dear sweet heart raced out of control.”
Ellis, who played tell-it-like-it-is medium Lafayette on the HBO vampire drama, spent four days in the hospital leading up to his death on Saturday, which was initially said to be from heart failure.
“Nelsan was ashamed of his addiction and thus was reluctant to talk about it during his life,” the statement added. “His family, however, believes that in death he would want his life to serve as a cautionary tale in an attempt to help others.”
he was trying to remove something that could kill him,
but it ended up killing him anyway.

@Jamarfoxx This is a tragic story and its even more hurtful because I actually met him while we were on set filming Get On Up along with Chadwick Boseman the guy who plays the Black Panther. We even have a scene with him. He was so cool on set and gave out autographs to everyone who asked. Knowing they didn’t suppose to. It goes to show you you never know what someone is struggling with. Thats why you should show love to everyone regardless of who they are. BTW jamari i think you should post about Brandon Rogers the singing dr and his tragic passing. His audition on America Got Talent premiered today and he brought down the house. I was in tears after they said he passed jun 11. His ig still up its drb_rog. His story is tragic he had his whole life ahead of him. He was just 29.
Yea. It’s unfortunate. But the body is amazing. It will adapt and get accustomed to operating with the addiction. However any drastic change will lead to shock. That’s why anorexics can’t simply start eating big meals again. The body heart can’t handle it.
Well, if it’s alcohol, u def shouldn’t go child turkey and it’s best to get professional help when it’s time to ween if u’ve been goin hard with it…basically your body establishes a new (albeit terrible) normal and u jus can’t stop or you’ll end up like Lafayette…cigs n weed u can throw that turkey in the freezer, you’ll be stressed/pissed at the world for a min, but you’ll def love thru it.
wow, that’s so sad. He was trying o get himself together too. Just goes to show that you have to talk to a doctor before trying to make moves on your own regarding your health. He was way too young.

It was due to him trying to do alcohol detox on his own which is a very bad idea. This is what killed Amy Whinehouse. It is very dangerous to do this on your own.
