Why Brandy’s Record Label Dragging Her Out Here?

Brandy-Magicis it me…
or has brandy been acting a little “strange” as of late?
i swear social media has ruined most for me.
so brandy went and allegedly compared her record label to slavery.
this is what she said via tmz:

Brandy claims the contract she signed with Chameleon Entertainment is like a ball and chain, and she has filed a lawsuit to break the shackles.

The singer has been signed to the record label since 2011 and claims in the lawsuit they promised her hundreds of thousands of dollars in production costs to make her albums. Brandy says that didn’t happen after the first album.

Brandy claims the label actually tried to prevent her from recording and releasing new music, which she says put her career in jeopardy.

According to the lawsuit, obtained by TMZ, the record label tried to pressure her into giving up her non-recording avenues of including concerts and Broadway shows.

Brandy’s lawyer says in the lawsuit, “Brandy Norwood’s story is ‘Kesha Redux, but without the sex.” As you know, Kesha also referred to her contract as slavery.

Brandy filed a similar lawsuit in L.A. back in March … the latest lawsuit was filed in NYC.

She wants out of the contract and hundreds of thousands of dollars she claims they owe her for pay or play fees.

yikes.
well this is what the label responded via tmz

Brandy’s record label just clapped back, saying the singer has no business comparing her contract to slavery … since it’s been more than a decade since she dropped a hit.

A rep for Chameleon Entertainment CEO Breyon Prescott tells TMZ … Brandy’s allegations are a desperate ploy to drum up publicity instead of facing facts — her best days are behind her. The rep says Breyon took a risk “signing an artist that hasn’t had a chart single success since the early 2000’s.”

Chameleon’s rep also believes Brandy made a bonehead PR move by making the slavery comparison due to racial tensions across the country right now.

We’re told Brandy and her lawyer reviewed the contract before signing, so Chameleon finds it odd she’s now crying foul.

well damn…brandyokay.
so i’m just gonna be 100 with it.

brandy is one of my favorite singers from the 90s.
i have pretty much all her music and some remixes.
brandy’s vocals on her tracks were literally sent from jesus.
i enjoy a brandy record…

…but brandy hasn’t been making the best moves with her career.
it’s bad when her brother is more popular than her.
whenever her singles drop,
there is literally little to no promotion for them.
when her stans find a track they love,
instead of her promoting and releasing a quick video,
it never sees the light of day.
now i don’t know if that’s the label or brandy,
but i think she is still living in that “90s” frame of mind.
there was no social media so it was basically radio and music videos.
it’s a different ball game in a “beyonce” and “rihanna” world.

i do think brandy’s time has come and gone.
these days are far from the 90s when she ruled supreme.
she doesn’t have that “machine” behind her as she use to.
she needs to also stop ranting on her social media like a crazy person.
go watch her snapchat and you’ll be like:

brandy-say-what-o

if she does break this contract,
she could as well go independent.
at this point,
she should be making eps.
remember when she tried to rap?
what happened to that?
the days of her selling out venues might be over.
that’s okay tho!
she paid her dues and established herself as an “icon”.
brandy may need to start over.

lowkey: and why is she not with a bigger named record label?
and who the hell is “slayana”?

  1. she should go independent honestly the average artist will not money for music in the industry…unless you’re a manufactured artist with no talent…the industry doesnt celebrate real music anymore, so much so that the radio doesnt even play real music anymore, every artists the radio plays sounds alike, sings alike there’s no diversity in music if you’re relying on labels…they keep making this ‘pop and B nonsense a watered down version of R&B. the only way you sell albums now singing R&B is if you’re a white artist doing it…no shade when a white artist drops an R&B album it’s a ‘masterpiece and everyone loves it when a black person does R&B it’s ‘they’re corny or they’re a flop’….she might as well go independent…release your own music, make your own money and keep it popping…even for artists like Beyonce and Rihanna most of their money comes from business franchises and endorsements or touring not really from music alone…I’m a huge fan of Beyonce (went to her concert in June here in Philly and Riri but lord knows i want to hear Real vocalists sometimes…when i went to Floetry concert in April it felt like my soul was on fire, great vocals, intimate performance and just raw vocals i miss that in music today…i listen to more so underground artists now because the females today are either always singing about sex and the male R&B singers too busy making ‘trap n B’ music…Brandy better team up with Kanye again and do another album like Afrodisiac…but people did sleep on 2/11 that was a great album…

  2. Brandy would be better off sticking to acting and becoming a serious television actress.

Music business is in a slump as it is.

  3. I’m on the fence with what you wrote about Brandy. I think that if she had the right machine behind her, she could be in the spotlight once again. They (the record label) sabotaged her like they did Monica with her Code Red album. You had bangers but you let the song drop, but the video doesn’t come till month’s later. They give the new artists big budgets and the veterans get crumbs. Cmon man. I will say that what messed up her career was lying about the supposed marriage she had. Brandy was the blueprint that a LOT of artists have modeled their careers off of. You still have people that check for her and Monica. It’s just that the record labels don’t believe in these artists that were popping in the 90’s and its sad. It’s not about talent anymore. It’s about high fashion, glam, and if you’re willing to sell out your morals to get a buck.

    1. I agree with the marriage thing. That was also during her cold period. She still built her ship back up. Hell if her best days are behind her then why sign her to begin with? Seems like a waste of everybodies time.

  4. Well from what I understood is that Chameleon Entertainment lost their distribution deal with their original parent label and have a new one on the table but Brandy feels like the one she sign with them is bad enough now they want more and she can’t go considering her career was already built by the end of the 90s. Me personally if they are not going to do the work to get an artist TV, Broadway, Movie Deals, and Book tours why should they get a cut. It sounds like they want a cut even though they not doing a lot of the work. I mean they dropped the ball with her last album “Two Eleven” they took forever to put out “Put It Down” as a proper single and even longer to put out the video. I mean Brandy was on a television show “The Game” before this album and after that means she is in peoples houses every week. Why would you not do the necessary promotion to make sure that these same people know Brandy has new music out there. It’s just like Kelly Rowland and X-Factor US, she had an album out at the same time she was appearing on this show. So let the audience know she has music out. K. Michelle has a show and she does fairly well her label supports her and does the necessary promotion considering she has her own show. Why when artist are on platforms like this the labels don’t give the push? Now don’t get me wrong “Human” was a dud! As was “Full Moon” which could explain her going cold and I would totally understand a label during that time say we need more but in recent years she had done “Family Business”, “Dancing With the Stars”, and “The Game” which was before the Deal with Chameleon. She built herself back up. Now these folk want to take a cut from what they had no hand in helping her get!?!? Really?! They better just letting her go & cut their loses. Hell the head of this company is Breyon Prescott the former business partner (and possible ex-lover) to Jamie Foxx. This is the same guy that attacked him at a pregrammy party that Usher threw in 2011. He even bit the mans finger look it up if you care to. Chameleon Entertainment needs to just let it go. NOT pay her but if she wants to go let her go and keep it moving. I hope that if she gets out of the this deal she does what Mya the singer did and go independent.

    1. ^whoa @ the jamie foxx fox talk.
      i didn’t even know that!
she needs to go independent and fund her own projects.
the thing is will she do the necessary promotion?

      1. As for the Jamie Foxx thing he was managed by Breton for a bit and something’s went array and decided to cut ties. So he shows up like he butt hurt and attacks the man. Real professional! Hell Jay-Z even blocked him from a lot of Rocnation events after this incident even allegedly said something to the effect of “we don’t associate with people who assault their artist”. Once again look it up if you care to. As for Brandy she should partner with somebody literally partner with somebody and put out music that route. That way she gets out of it what they as collective put into it. She can tour besides that’s where most R&B artist make their money anyway. Just makes sense. That’s what Mya did not to say she is huge but she has put out several independent project that have faired well and she was not half the star Brandy was.

    2. Wait…how can you call Full Moon a dud?! Lol
That was one of her better discs.

  5. I agree with those who said that she should release some EP’s, even if it’s just to get her name and sound out there for those who don’t really know her…and this generation may not know her, believe it or not. Many are resistant to listening to music outside of the “trap” movement. Lol
Her Full Moon & Brandy cd’s were excellent discs, but the PR for both was lacking.

  6. I love me some brandy but the last hot single I can remember was that song she did with Chris brown a few years ago. I think she has lost a lot of her confidence through the years because of her success in the 90’s and early 2000’s. It’s hard to go from being on top to having to struggle later on down the line, she has tried to promote her new albums in the past but to be honest people were not interested in buying her music unless it was her die hard fans.

This whole dispute with the record company is not what she needs right now and I agree I do think she should release eps. I really like that beggin and pleading song she came out with last year it seemed liked she finally found her sound and was hoping her new music would sound more like that. good luck to her.

  7. I agree with everything you wrote Jamari. It is rumored that she came for Monica when Monica performed at the VH1 hip hop honors. I honestly feel that Brandy career went downhill when she faked her marriage to that one dude, and the accident she was in didn’t help either. Brandy ruled r& b and television in the 90s but that was her time and I think her time has been gone by. I honestly don’t feel she really can redeem herself. I feel that she just needs to stick to acting and just perform here and there. By the way I hope she is not having a mental breakdown.
