Queen Latifah has joined the cast of “Empire” co-creator Lee Daniels‘ new untitled Fox drama pilot.

The series, focusing on the rise of an all-female singing group from Atlanta, will feature Latifah as the owner of an Atlanta beauty salon and a mentor to the women in the group.

Also joining the cast are newcomers Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny and Brittany O’Grady as the members of the group — Star, Alexandra and Simone, respectively.

The untitled drama is the first project to come out of Daniels’ overall deal with producer 20th Century Fox Television.

Fox announced the pilot order in August, during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour. Speaking to reporters during the tour, Daniels revealed that the series would be about a white woman named Star who forms a girl group with two black women.

“Star is white and she is thrust into a world of blackness,” Daniels told reporters at the time. He added, “She has a sister who is half black, Simone, and she has a best friend who is black, and they move to Atlanta to form a girls group.

Asked about his inspiration for the show, Daniels said, “It’s based on Labelle, it’s based on the Supremes, it’s based on TLC, it’s based on Destiny’s Child. Same sort of inspirations, same sort of template when we created Empire.”
Music for the show will be created by Swizz Beatz.

The new pilot contains the possibility for a crossover with “Empire,” but there are no immediate plans for such a stunt, Fox’s Dana Walden stated that same day when asked by a reporter earlier in the day after announcing the pilot order.

“It’s not inconceivable that the two worlds could cross, but that’s not Lee’s intention,” she said. “Perhaps down the line there will be some shared DNA, but not heading into the show.”

alicia keys guest stars on “empire”,
now her husband is doing music for the new show.
you see how business and networking words?
well it sounded good…
until i got to the “snow vixen in a world of blackness” part.

aJC4Jdei’m happy for queen to get a good role,
but that story line sounds lowkey sketch.
i guess do whatever,
since empire is a hit,
and hope the audience eats it up?
right?

  1. I’m going to be honest I’m not that excited about this. Daniels should focus on stabilizing Empire as a brand for a few more seasons then do a spin off. Sorry but he’s no Shonda Rhimes yet.

  2. I’m a fan of queen Latifah but I’m not so sure about this show, I guess I’ll have to wait and see.

  3. I know what this is. He’s going to use this show to sneak in his gripes about the black community like he does with Empire. It’s so obvious.

I agree with James that our success in other areas besides music and sports should be explored. However, I do not want Lee Daniels or Tyler Perry to be the ones to do it.

Lee Daniels needs to just go ahead and make a show centered around gay men already. Write what you know. He could give us a black Queer As Folk.

    1. If you don’t want Lee or Tyler.Who do you want to do it,what producers would you like to see do it?

      1. I would hope such established directors as Lee Daniels & Tyler Perry would help put others on. I know for a fact Tyler has allowed other black directors to direct his sitcoms House of Payne & Meet The Browns. I don’t know any but I’m sure there’s a bunch of hungry indie directors out there just waiting for their chance.

    2. Omg I would love a black version of Queer As Folk cause we need it. What happen to Patrik-Ian Polk?

  4. I’m thrilled Mr Daniels is developing another series. But yet again about the music business. From my understanding, this new show is a sort of spin off of Empire. But why not focus on some other industry other than music – And please not sport.

There is black success across the industries! Music and sport seem to be all to common themes.

    Just a thought.
