You’re going to need a glass of wine for this one. After nearly eight drama-filled years on Bravo’s hit Real Housewives of Atlanta, fast-talking fan favorite NeNe Leakes is calling it quits, she tells PEOPLE exclusively.
Leakes, 47, – arguably the network’s biggest star, who’s been with the show since its inception – will not be returning for season 8. She says there comes a time when enough is enough.
“This was definitely a hard decision for me,” Leakes tells PEOPLE. “Me and my husband [Gregg Leakes] have been going back and forth on it for weeks now. But my contract is up and I just think this is the right time. This is my opportunity to spread my wings and do different things.”
The announcement comes with the news that Leakes will soon be focusing on totally new projects.
“I’m actually going to be doing a new primetime television show with a big legend,” Leakes teases of the series she begins filming this week. “All of my fans will get to see me be really happy, witty and funny and tell all of those one liners that I always have said on Housewives.”It’s a positive new direction that the mother of two is more than happy to take.
“I feel a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders,” says Leakes, who throughout the years was the center of many arguments and altercations on the show.
“There were times when I was a target,” she says. “I won’t miss the negativity.”
But will she be missed?
“I think some of the girls will be happy,” Leakes says. “They always felt like I was the star, and they were never able to really shine with me there, so here’s their opportunity to shine.”
But lest they get too comfortable, “I’m not saying I’m gone forever,” Leakes warns. “I’ll probably pop up and play with those girls every now and then.”
but that ignorant woman did make this show.

I just cannot believe Cynthia is still on the show. Although I hate to see Nene leave (I’ve been watching since the start!) She had gotten to the point she was unbearable to watch. She just had gotten too grand.
I feel like she’ll be back. That’s a lot of money to leave on the table…
Either she will be back or the show will be canceled after this season. The “Real Housewives” trend has reached its peak and is on the decline. Can’t wait for all of these reality shows to disappear from TV.

I hope they bring in some dynamic/tv good cast this season to rebrand the show basically. When you think about it, they all argue abt the same stuff, have eaten at every damn restaurant in Atlanta and Nene’s attitude became completely unbearable. Hope she can swim in that water, though.

Are you serious right now? Nene is a manipulating, vulgar, conceited, unapologetic BULLY!! I won’t lie, Kenya is the type to do messy shit and then act innocent like she’s a victim but Nene is a nasty person PERIOD. I loved the way Kandi put her on blast in the reunion and exposed her for airing out her private text messages with Cynthia to the other women because Kandi exposed Nene for who she really is. I used to like Kenya, but after seeing how messy & fucked up she can be I came to my senses.
I just don’t understand how anybody can like NENE. ESPECIALLY GAY MEN. Y’all know she is PUBLICLY not here for us! I know a lot of people who say that they like gays secretly don’t like us but we’ve seen how Nene has dogged out gay men. That’s why I don’t stan for any celebrities because I feel as though they’re all fake as shit and they use the gays for monetary gain. But Nene has publicly expressed her disdain for us. She only likes the puppet gays (effeminate ones who idolize her) if they’re benefiting her, i.e. buying her cringeworthy t-shirts. Any gay man that likes that moose is beyond pathetic.
I really can’t with this woman she is complete a mess! But I do wonder how would to the show be without this woman but we’ll and btw I think this show is so beneath the dignity of a Kim Fields but i guess no one is beneath making it holla fa ah dolla lol!(ebonicially speaking).
Yea, I just read this. Filming begins next week they say, it’s definitely really soon since Kenya returned from her usual after season vacation. I have a strong feeling Phaedra and Porsha were fired and this is the result, and I’ve read they were on the bubble. Kenya, Kandi, and Cynthia were invited back and so was Nene. With no allies, she would have been forced to get along with new women. Mariah Huq has been said to be joining on the low, and she was asked to be on the show a few years back, but came up with Married to Med idea, she said this herself. If Bravo knew Nene was leaving ahead of time, they have someone big in place. With no family, Kenya can’t carry the show, nope.

Well Basketball Wives Miami never had high ratings anyway. Housewives was way popular. Yea LAHHATL ratings have fallen as well.
