so i listened to cowboy carter and well…

i saw “act ii: cowboy carter” leaked yesterday and i told myself:

“DON’T JAMARI!
CHILL!”

i was laying in bed,
while recovering from bad allergies when i saw it all over twitter.
i am proud of myself for waiting until the actual release to listen.
so my thoughts

When I first heard “Act I: Renaissance”,
I immediately liked everything about that album.
We were in the middle of the pandemic and needed that “talk yo shit” energy.
Many people didn’t like “Break Your Soul” but at that moment,
with all I was dealing with,
that song came right on time.

before i start,
i’m here to font that i’m a “16 carriages” stan.

that song made me cry the first time i heard it.
texas hold’em” had to grow on me but i’m really into it now.
it sounds better within the album tbh.
“act ii: cowboy carter” didn’t hit me like “act i: renaissance” did.
its all over the place as far as the vibe and it gets kinda weird at times.
a good weird tho.
a “i can fux with this” weird.
the first half is country inspired and the second half slides into beyonce’s country.
my favs so far are:

American Requiem
Bodyguard
Jolene
Spaghetti
Ya Ya
Tyrant
Sweet | Honey | Buckin’
Amen

this is the type of album that is more laid back that i have to sit with.
it’s not in your face like when we were at the renaissance ball.
we aren’t alien superstars this go round.
this era,
bey wants us ride stallions and chill in the grass with a bottle of whiskey.
it feels like there are a lot of love or love-ish songs on there.
i’m not really in a “love songs” kind of mood as of late tbh.
i’ll admit that getting through those kinds of tracks were a challenge for me.
i’m gonna pop an edible and really “hear” it over the weekend tho.

Act ii: Cowboy Carter” has country influences with some 60s/70s vibes to it.
The racist jackals can sleep easy because it isn’t straight up country.
This is what I assume Bey’s country would sound like.

Introspective with a side of ratchet.

i feel like its the type of album people will revisit in the future.
one of those albums that doesn’t hit you until life helps you understand.
so even though i’m fully at the rodeo this era,
i’ll admit that act i: renaissance spoke to me immediately.
act ii: cowboy carter feels like it will truly speak to me later on.

lowkey: azealia didn’t like it.

tbh,
i would have wanted to see a taylor or kacey appearance.

dolly parton singing on jolene would have been cool too.
okay bye!

  1. Nelly had that song with Tim McGraw back in middle school. We can make country sound good. We made it. I will listen later this weekend or next weekend.

Most men in country cannot sing. I like some country because the women HAVE to be able to sing. Carrie Underwood can blow. That’s why Taylor Swift will NEVER be country to me.

    1. Facts. Country women blow. Maybe real black singers need to go to Country since black ppl only want emo talkers like Summer Walker nem.

  2. It IS too long but it sounds less “country” than 60’s psychedelica when artists experimented with many styles within one album. I actually prefer this one creatively/ artistically over Renaissance. YaYa, Desert Eagle, Protector, Bodyguard, and Sweet Honey Buckin are the songs with replay value for me. Azealia also has a point about Beyonce leaving the “don’t tempt my man” trope alone. It’s just overdone at this point.

  3. I still haven’t listened to Renaissance, but ‘Ya Ya’ popped up on my YouTube so I listened while cooking and cleaning, and I like a lot of this so far. But I appreciate melodies and vocal arrangements a lot more than most ppl. The harmonies on sooo many of these songs is dope! Beyonce’s natural voice is low and sits perfectly in her gut, and I knew once they said she was doing a country album she was gonna really use that. RnB listeners don’t appreciate women singing low like country does. You can really hear the vocal stacking in the harmonies.

  4. Hold up Jamari. For some reason, I haven’t been able to see any new posts since the 3/5 post about Matthews. I thought you were just taking time away. But everytime I came to the page since then (until today) that was the first post on the page. Meanwhile, you’ve been posting since then. Any clue?
