There Are Too Many Black People On Television

tumblr_nh74vpMEuh1u4br6yo1_1280as you know,
there is an influx of blacks in prime time tv.
all of which have made ratings soar!
empire being the shining star.
well i read an article from deadline today…
apparently there are too many “ethnics” on tv.
ima just let you read a snippet

There was a noticeable shift toward minority castings last season, with more parts opening up to ethnic actors, a casting term used for non-Caucasian thesps. It was a concerted effort, with more than one instance where a family member role was rewritten as adopted to make them ethnic. Then, following the success of freshman series How To Get Away With Murder, Black-ish, Fresh Off The Boat, Jane the Virgin and especially Empire, which launched to huge ratings at the kickoff of pilot casting season, ethnic castings exploded this season.

The change is welcomed by talent agents who no longer have to call casting directors and ask them if they would possibly consider an ethnic actor for a part, knowing they would most likely be rejected. “I feel that the tide has turned,” one agent said. “I can pitch any actor for any role, and I think that’s good.”

But, as is the case with any sea change, the pendulum might have swung a bit too far in the opposite direction. Instead of opening the field for actors of any race to compete for any role in a color-blind manner, there has been a significant number of parts designated as ethnic this year, making them off-limits for Caucasian actors, some agents signal. Many pilot characters this year were listed as open to all ethnicities, but when reps would call to inquire about an actor submission, they frequently have been told that only non-Caucasian actors would be considered. “Basically 50% of the roles in a pilot have to be ethnic, and the mandate goes all the way down to guest parts,” one talent representative said.

In one instance, after a number of actors of different ethnicities tested for two roles in a pilot this year, two Caucasian actors ended up being the top choices for the two remaining regular parts. However, because of a mandate from the studio and network, one of the roles had to diverse, so the pilot could only cast one of the top choices and pass on the other to fulfill the ethnic quota. “They need to say the best man or woman wins,” one rep suggested.

so basically…
this article is implying that “ethnics” are taking all the white roles.
am i wrong for thinking this?
well my response:

the writer of that ignorance is named nellie andreeva.

  1. She and everyone else who have a problem with minority casts should just be happy that most of the TV shows named are those in which we are the leads instead of the token side-character. Used to be we were used to fill a quota. Now the tables have turned.

      1. ^ My point exactly! Its not like anything is really changing! Its just one season where TV has a heavier saturation of “ethnics” and we’re “stealing jobs” lmao. If white people aren’t the front and centre 100% of the time, we’re stealing from them, and all of a sudden they try to flip the switch and when we fight back we’re being butt-hurt and racist to THEM!
They want to be victims SO bad its pathetic. Not our fault you’re paying for your Neanderthal and barbaric ancestors. Suck it up, we had to.
I love how she says we’re “stealing” too. Yet another way to criminalize black people, even though we’ve earned our place fair and square.
I guess the world is still not used to seeing black people playing the corporate and entertainment ladders as opposed to the usual stereotypes but I’ll start sipping my tea on that note lol.

      2. I hope FOX doesn’t pull a fast one on us like they did in the 90’s. When their network is struggling they throw us a bone. As soon as them ratings are good again, they dump us for more white programming. Tho like you both said, whites are still the majority. Even on shows with multiple black leads, whites outnumber them.

        1. No I dont think that it. I think that black people make up 13% of the population. We have as interest in vfc watching you as you do watching us. I’ve just turned my tv off. I watched a couple of shoes as night since senfield freinds cheers ect. However I also watched the Cosby show the Jefferson Sanford and son family matters and dave Chappelle. There trying to shove their vision down our throats. We deserve to have family’s that look like ours. Without interracial parents with the 1 white son as the gender fluid cross dresser. Its effing offensive.

  2. Ugh, when it comes to people like this, its sometimes just best to ignore them. I love how this individual failed to mention the struggles that the “ethnics” have been dealing with when it comes to the entertainment industry for the last hundred years at least, this goes way back to Blackface.
I’m sure someone of her privileged perspective will say something “culturally enlightened” such as “its, in the past, we are talking about the present.” Well actually, we’re not. Even as we speak, “ethnics” as they call it have been under-represented, and misrepresented consistently by the media ever since the current mainstream media has been around. The one time “ethnics” are getting the limelight, its now a “problem”?
This ingrate is acting as if Caucasian actors aren’t going to get jobs at all, or aren’t going to continue being preferred over their black counter-parts. She acts as if they are not going to continue being picked over their more talented, and more deserving “ethnic” counter part SOLELY BECAUSE THEY ARE WHITE and “attractive” (using that term loosely here, as if one look is attractive all the time), as if they are not going to continue being treated with the benefit of the doubt by the society they live in.
This idiot needs to sit down, shut and be thankful that her life has been handed to her because she’s white, because her dumb-ass didn’t have to work hard or have talent, if she’s writing that mess in the position she’s in.
Go back to school, fool, and take a seat with some super-glue, you will not be needing your legs anytime soon.
This conversation between whites and blacks is getting real old, real fast. Just UGH!

      1. So, black people can’t be racist? AA is a form of social engineering that leads to positive discrimination. Of course, this leads to a backlash. And so the cycle continues.

    1. You should talk Mexican!!! It’s embarrassing for us decent & cultured So. Americans to see your people shouting, screaming, demanding & flying your flags, why don’t you do these things in your own shythole of a country? If it’s so bad here, go home.

    2. Lindo- funny we think the same about you —those of you who cannot seem to go through an entire day without naming /blaming someone a racist , cannot seem to take the blame for any of your own ignorant actions and then wonder why your shot or killed, cannot seem to break the decades old cycle of lawlessness ,drugs, guns, violence ,unwed mothers , missing fathers , cannot follow simple police instructions, routinely acting like you are above the law, and then cry the blues when you realize your not above the law and get caught….that is if you are still alive by then. Blacks now have the lowest level of unemployment since stats began to be taken yet they still cannot find a job? or is it because they just rather blame someone else for all their own myriad faults and stupid choices they make over and over and over again.

    1. I know! especially when we watch the insolent, ignorant blacks attacking the Police. Ask Oprah or some other black who made it thanks to AA to ship you back to Africa so you can be happy and take the millions of black women with 15 kids and no daddy.

  3. Once again the foxhole misses the point. Executives and producers have shifted their characters interests into only casting stereotypes. And to be completely honest, Lee Daniels and “Empire” do an excellent job of bringing down African-Americans. The loud mouth black woman, the rapping black man with three sons: 1 who gay, the other in an interracial relationship, and the other who is just there. Empire is full of stereotypes and bad portrayals of black people but most don’t see that since they’re happy we’re in leading roles. Even “Fresh Off The Boat” is horribly offensive, just the title alone. Black-ish is that “white” black family has eschewed the hood culture and has to “prove their blackness” to others and struggle raising their kids culturally. As much as I LOVE Olivia Pope’s character she too is a jezebel and an over sexualized black woman.

    1. I agree with you, to a degree, but here’s the question: how do you accurately portray the average black family in a television show that’s marketable? I mean, Empire is not an average black family, they are portraying a hip-hop mogul’s family, so what’s that supposed to look like? Its messy for the sake of the storyline, not to misrepresent black people. These aren’t meant to be the average black people. I dont see anything wrong with Jamal’s, Andre’s, or Hakeem’s characters .
Jamal is a positive gay representation I think, and Andre’s character is more educational than anything, and Hakeem is supposed to be a provocative spoiled brat (think Justin Bieber type personality) its not a black thing, its a rich person’s and upbringing thing.
To be honest, it sounds a little bit like you’re saying, if these characters aren’t the Cosby family (which is a positive representation of Black people, but not necessarily accurate) then they are written off as stereotypes. I see these characters more as archetypes rather than stereotypes
The same thing with Olivia Pope, I dont agree that shes portraying an over-sexualized Black woman, and the premise of the show is centered on it being a convoluted love story to begin with centered around Fitz and Olivia. You can’t criticize Olivia’s character without also criticizing the men she’s involved with as well. I mean the President’s character is obviously married and is openly being unfaithful to his already emotionally abused wife, amongst a host of other things. Anytime Olivia is with another man, its to put emphasis on the emotional strain of the not-so-secret, secret and tumultuous relationship between Fitz and Olivia. Besides shes not exclusive to Fitz, so why is she not allowed to get it in once in awhile? Its not every episode lol. I mean, the character isn’t supposed to be perfect, and aren’t always supposed to positively represent Black people.
As far as Black-ish, I haven;t personally watched the show, but you just stereotyped them in a way that they were trying to challenge in the show. From my knowledge, the point of those characters was for the sole purpose of challenging what it means to be an average Black American. I think that was the point that you missed there, but I may be wrong.
As far as Empire and Scandal are concerned, you might be over-reaching a bit I think, but thats just my opinion.
People have had the same criticism about Tyler Perry’s productions as well.
I haven’t watched the other shows or even heard of them, so I wont say anything on those. This was just my opinion on your comment, not meant to criticize you.

  4. I agree. I am from So. America and am tired of seeing so many blacks on t.v. commercials & shows that promote nothing but their “culture” like laughing, jumping, using Ebonics, wild animals. Some of those shows are disgusting, but, if it weren’t for the blacks Jerry Springer, Maury & others would be out of business. Now they copied old shows & turned them into trash, i.e. Let’s Make a Deal, Family Feud, etc. I’m grateful that I have a choice & watch channels that show the old, decent shows, where people knew how to behave & speak properly

  5. Social engineering is being attempted by those (entertainment and AD institutions) who are not smart enough to apply it in a positive manner, and, should not be engaging in it. The E industry is being pressured by minority special interest, and they have folded. I would I like to see what is circulating from these special interest groups and publish it. The message being told by special interest is to fill that screen with black faces with impunity. Whites, being under protected and under represented, are being victimize and made to look like buffoons, as blacks are placed into unrealistic and improbable roles as authorities, father figures, role models, and professionals. White folk are easy targets due to the lack of protection and representation. Anti discrimination laws due not apply to white folk. My response to this trend is simple, white flight will have to take place, and to what cost, realistically, very little. Who does not agree that television is literally a vast waste land of non redeeming slather, lacking quality content of any kind. It is rife with ever increasing advertisement, and, that if you are a subscriber of some sort, you are paying for, and, is essentially ever increasingly reducing your time for programming. What a concept, you are paying to be fed advertisement. How absurd! White flight, it is the only action the E industry will recognize.

  6. The situation has gotten to a point of disgusting. However, generally speaking, Whites don’t watch TV anymore because they work, use internet TV, etc. And what makes the situation worse is networks/news are influenced by the DNC. Minorities still watch TV. It’s a ‘has been’ medium.

  7. Ignorant? Like hell…better term would be ‘observant’ or ‘aware’.
Miscegenation is being forced down the culture’s throat…and, of course, all the blacks are as civil as the Euro population…
What folly. As if ‘woke’ people can’t see it?

  8. The aggressive and violent blacks get NOTHING on merit how many centuries are going to pass before they GET IOVER Slavery. Every European culture was subject to slavery ; in fact every CULTURE IN THE WORLD was subjected to slafery whgich began in Africa in Ancient Egypt. WHy do blacks feel they are so special. They are special ed. They are the only ethnic group wthe only race that is so villent and hateful that they simply cannot pull themselves out of the ghetto without demanding they be gicen jobs and roles now. “FEED ME, SEYMOUR!: LOL! Blacks are such a joke they fight for things that tell them they are inferior. Hilarious people FEED ME!!! My favorit movie Little Shop OIf Horrors depicts the monsters blacks become they ingratiate themselves with ;poor white liberals and then they consume FEED ME! they cannot take care of themselves Whites have to take care of them because thye will never be self sufficient they are incompetent idiots who will forever be violent and never look at themselves who are the PROBLEM 70 percent of the crime doesn’t lie.

  9. :FEED ME!” :FEED ME SEYMOUR!: : FEED ME: black population. USA equals Little Shop of Horrors. And big ugly thick lipped plants equal blacks who will NEVER be self sufficient and will always be violent YOU NEVER get anything on merit how undignified-how you lack integrity. How disgusting!

If you wouldn't say it on live TV with all your family and friends watching, without getting canceled or locked up, don't say it on here. Stay on topic, no SPAM, and keep it respectful. Thanks!
