privilege, perspective, and white people who show up

I’m going to font a controversial statement ahead.
Please put in your crash helmet.

not every white person is a terrible human being…

ducks behind my space bar

i’ve been reflecting on this while,
observing white folks out in the wild as of late.
even the white folks i know in my own life.
sure,
there are some real characters among them.
plenty,
in fact,
who can’t be trusted.
we’ve all had our fair share of run-ins with white jackals and hyenas.
no news flash there but,
let’s be honest,
there are plenty of black folks who aren’t exactly winning humanitarian awards either.

See: 90% of the straight black male celebrities atm.

this isn’t one of those “whataboutism” arguments.
it’s definitely not a “white is right” entry either.
this is more about clarity:

Knowing and recognizing who’s truly for us and who’s not.

it’s a basic survival skill in these times.
for me,
it all comes down to actions.
there are white folks out there who genuinely want to be allies,
who understand their privilege,
and how to use it to fight the good fight.
they stand with us,
not above us or try to copy us,
and they’re just as fed up with the nonsense as we are.
let’s not sugarcoat it:

There are also trash black folks who don’t have our best interests at heart as well.
Some actively work against us,
whether it’s voting against progress or cozying up to white supremacy for a check.
We see it and we know it.

so how do we navigate this?
how do we figure out who’s truly on our side?

especially now,
when every headline feels like a test of who’s for justice or wants us in shackles.
maybe the answer is to stop lumping all white folks together and focus on:

Their actions
Their choices
Their consistency

because the truth is:

Allies come in all shades,
but so do saboteurs.
The key is knowing the difference,
both in others and within ourselves.

lowkey: it’s interesting to me the white jackals who are trash,
i see many black folks running behind.
the white folks who are actually for us get ignored and questioned for their motives.
