stephanie mills thinks beyonce is not even on diana ross level of beauty and class?

a few people i know aren’t into beyonce as many are.
when i asked why,
because i’m always curious,
they told me they don’t like all the cursing and ratchetness she does.
i mean,
thats fine.
stephanie mills said beyonce isn’t like diana ross,
who many have compared her to in the past (destiny’s child era).
she said beyonce is more “hip hop” than glamourous diana ross…

i mean,
i think beyonce is a different kind of glamour but also…

Diana was in a whole other generation compared to Beyonce.

wasn’t diana following a trend as well back then?
every generation has its trends that artists follow to sell records.
beyonce is doing what the trends for black artists entail in this era.
r&b playing nice with hip-hop.
limited singing,
more rap shit-talking,
over trap beats.
hip hop is such a powerful genre when you think about it.

was diana ross even an entertainer like b?
i feel like this is the extent of her dancing and performing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZkGaAqK-Nk

i feel like bey is more comparable to tina tuner tbh:

am i wrong?

That was so sad to read. Beyonce? A trailblazer? Where? When? How? Her music always will be strip club classics. There shall always be twerking music for the chicks to pop that badussy to and Beyonce’s babble will be in constant rotation.
You are probably young and have no point of reference to understand the iconoclastic legends. Maybe I am too old to understand the elements of Beyonce’s alleged musical genius. Her supposed influence is PR hype. Brush up on your history? Get to know the pantheon of great entertainers from the 20’s 30’s 40’s before discounting them.β€οΈπŸŒΉβ€οΈπŸ’‹

  2. There is no comparison, Diana started off having to pee in the woods and not even being able to come through the front door of restaurants when she started touring. I will always pay homage to the old school stars because they had to go through unimaginable circumstances that none of these new stars could even imagine having to go through. Beyonce herself knows that because of Diana she is able to be the International Superstar that she is today. Diana is the blueprint for glamourous Diva along with so many other women in her generation like Freda Payne, Lola Falana, Dionne Warwick and Nancy Wilson, these beautiful women paved the way. Beyonce, no doubt is a force to be reckon with but she cant touch the old Diva’s of yesteryear including Tina whom she is rightly compared too. She is a good singer, not a naturally great singer like Whitney or Mariah, she is a great dancer but Janet and Ciara IMO are better, of course she is pretty which helps her to go further than many with just as much talent. She is a hard worker who is able to use all of her gifts to be a great overall entertainer, a bona fide Superstar, but she still has to put in a few years for me to consider her one of the truly greats to be on the level with Diana, Aretha, Dionne, Patti, Glady’s and so many of the other Old School DIVA’s!

  3. SETI, you kind of said it but we have to be honest BeyoncΓ© aside, when we talk about two different eras , we are talking about the difference between being publicly respectable and poised vs now where people are actually on public platforms talking about how they like to be pissed and shitted on; and there is a refusal to say which era is better; I’m sorry but I’m going to with the poised era.

Look like I said` before I actually like BeyoncΓ© but I think the veneer is starting to crack and people are getting tired of her and Jay Z and unless they come with some absolute and undeniable fire, the industry is ready to move past them and look to the future with artist like Lizzo.

Also, if we are to be honest, I think that BeyoncΓ© is receiving some residual backlash from the Stan Wars. Look the Stan Wars did cost a lot of people their shine and careers and now everyone wants to cry about how there are no more superstars well people spent all their time tearing others down to build people up. Look Ciara should be bigger than what she is we all know she can dance and perform her butt off, but she was a casualty of the Stan Wars, the same with Keri Hilson and a slew of others. While you can’t directly blame BeyoncΓ© for that, i don’t think she is entirely innocent either. That Grammy situation is Wack, you have all those Grammys because you won them in categories that no one even heard of much less cared about; you’re BeyoncΓ© your supposed to compete only in the major categories or remove your work from consideration like Drake or the Weekend. By entering her work in all these various categories, she was robbing other up and coming artists with a chance to shine and get their name out there on the big stage all so she could pad her numbers.

I maybe ranting but it’s crazy to think that the artists with the most #1 hits and successful careers, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Michael, Jackson, and Madonna all were out and at their peak at roughly the same time. I just have to wonder where is that for this generation?

      I love what you wrote❀️🌹.
I prefer the era of poise, professionalism and lack of media exposure.
When listening to Performers in my generation interviews: Ms. Aretha, Ms. Ross, Knight, Warwick, LaBelle, Shirley Bassey, were articulate, well spoken and informed. Class acts.
Maxine Powell trained women and men to shine, and many are still shining. Artist Development equaled long term employability. Their personal lives remained inaccessible for the most part.
The thin voice chicks showing pussy prints and breast jobs, the guys and the obligatory “πŸ†”leakage is passe’.
The fights, the trashy inappropriate behaviour and constant beef is not cute. Beyonce dresses cute, but unless Sasha Fierce shows up, she is a inarticulate mess. And most of these kiddos are attention whores and tiresome. Diana Ross and the above mentioned ladies have created iconic music and moments. I can see anyone sitting around a campfire singing BugABoo, Sugar MoMA, Lemonade in polite company. Trashiness sells and that’s a fact!

  4. πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„so here we go again..there is always someone who wants to compare someone . So comparing King James with MJ is not enough now it’s Bey and Dianna πŸ™„I didn’t even knew that was happening.

Look like MJ/ James these 2 ladies are from different eras. There is no comparison. Each performer had their own challenges in their era that they had to overcome. Dianna came out of an era where if you couldn’t SING you would be stoned with rotten apples of the stage. In Bey’s era everyone and their Ma can go on stage and pretend to sing. As long as they can strap 2 words together they call it Hip Hop or Rap. 2 different eras, 2 different standards.

In Dianna’s era you had to WORK and look glamourous to be even applauded on stage. Nowadays all U have to do is show your pussy and everyone goes Ga Ga. Again 2 different eras, 2 different standards.

So no there is NO comparison between artistes from the 90s to present day artistes. All I will say is 30 or even 40 years from now I think it will be honest to say people will remember more of Madame Ross”s music and sing it when it’s played on the radio or TV than to remember Bey’s songs. Beys songs are for the moment. Dianna’s songs are timeless 😎

    1. We don’t have to compare, but since we are
Diana isn’t as trail blazing as Beyonce, but she has been comparable in every field (exuding acting lol).
Diana’s catalogue is “timeless’ but that because she has had time to solidify, and that people that were there for her peak are still alive. I assure you in 20 years Beyonce’s music will be classics because her music will be nostalgic and familiar to new older generation.
Time will tell if diana’s music will still be “timeless” after the people who lived when her hits were current die out.
How many artist and songs from the 1930s do you know?
There is a bias against the new in favor of the old. “They don’t make em like they used to” “in my day singers could sing” etc

  5. Diana Diana DIANA! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
    Incomparable Timeless Diana 🌹🌹
Beyonce πŸ™„πŸ₯ΊNO NO NO NO NO

  6. I love Stephanie and I agree with you both to an extent. BeyoncΓ© is from a different generation so certain songs and topics were off limits back then. However Diana was and is beautifully Human. Her life isn’t without flaws neither so the public perception of her may be classiest However the reality was much different. Diana lived her life as BeyoncΓ© has lived hers. One thing for sure, Yonce has cemented her status to be mention in the same breath, especially by comparison, to the greats. Tina Turner and Michael Jackson are the ones BeyoncΓ© emulates.

  7. I knew the gays wasn’t going to let Stephanie live this down 🀣. I just watched her interview segments and I know she about to give some good tea like Smokey. Stephanie Mills is a legend and headliner in her own right who has seen them all come and go. I respect her opinion though I disagree, they are very comparable with Diana being the pioneer and BeyoncΓ© being the master student. Nobody had the game in a chokehold the way that the Supremes did in the 60’s, even Aretha how to bow down to their 12 #1 hits and global impact. Diana stormed movies and music in the β€˜70s which set the precedent for Whitney and BeyoncΓ© to follow decades later. Diana’s only rivals are Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand and Tina Turner. Let’s just be clear that Diana was and still is the blueprint that everybody has borrowed from for at least 4 generations now. BeyoncΓ© is on par to have that same reach, she’s at least 2 generations in. I am tired of all the BeyoncΓ© comparisons but these other girls and boys have not been as consistent as she has been so I guess it comes with the territory. Let’s not diminish Diana to make her descendant bigger, Diana did the Super Bowl Halftime show in the 90’s as the FIRST diva to do it! They even gave her a Diamond Diana legacy performance at the Grammys and American Music Awards a few years ago just for being 75 lol. Diana is still and forever will be THAT girl!

  8. I’m sorry Stephanie took that bait to start this conversation. That being said, I’ve made the same statement about Beyonce. Not comparing her to Diana Ross specifically, but that there are elements of her public persona that don’t reflect class to me. I also agree a more accurate comparison would be Tina rather than Diana. I enjoy some of the music – DIL, BDay, 4, and Black is King but just talking about what I see/hear. I’m older and my benchmarks for class are VERY different from this generation. Mama Tina is a closer reflection for me. Let Beyonce live (now the BeyHive fanbase is a WHOLE ‘nother story, LOL, as I wish she would do something about them) as she has worked hard and cemented her legacy in music history…

  9. It’s really nothing to compare. Different eras; diifferent styles mostly. Beyonce is nxt level entertainment. The only thing she doesn’t have that Diana does, is the acting chops. She excel at class (the receipts are in the things artists mention about here) and well, look at her; we know that girl is beautiful; carries herself very well. All respect to Diana and Stephanie but why compare?

#Yonce’ all on our moufs like liquor.

  10. I stopped liking short stop Stephanie when she made those comments about Kanye west. She can kick rocks down the yellow brick road.

  11. We need to stop pitting women…particularly black women against one another. There’s “space” for them all.

  12. I think early in she is hybrid of three honestly. Diana & Michael as far as starting point and star potential early in. The Tina as far as performance factor. Honestly I respect Stephanie Mills but Diana was a whole mess along with her success. From the affair with Berry Gordy, possible having sex with an adolescent Michael Jackson, the way she mistreated other two Supremes and other entertainers in the business. I got the glamor but class? Diana Ross was in illusion of Glass but a whole mess underneath the fake. Now I know people say BeyoncΓ© aint no saint and I understand this but Diana is definitely a sinner. Who am I to judge though?

    1. And Smokey Robinson just did an interview and revealed he had a short relationship with Diana while he was married. His wife,Claudette, was a member of his group The Miracles and they(Motown groups) would all tour together.I bet Diana was friends/friendly with his wife.

    2. Well that’s a great point. In Diana’s generation stars were untouchable, you didn’t know a whole lot about their lives. Diana was this shining goddess that float in the sky and thats all you saw.
Beyonce started off that way but that never fit her personality (she’s too homegirl for it) and with social media and paparazzi stars seem closer to the ground than before.

  13. I wish people would stop bringing up Beyonce in every discussion.A couple of weeks Stephen A Smith was comparing Beyonce to Rihanna regarding The Superbowl now somebody comparing Bey to Diana Ross. All of these artists are different and unique, stop with the comparisons.

    1. ^yeah,
i don’t see diana ross from her nowadays.
when she was in destiny’s child then sure.
they even did a magazine cover about it too LOL
