Mallory Owens was released from the hospital Monday afternoon. Her mother, Kristi Taylor, tells News 5 that she is now recovering at the home where the beating took place; Travis Hawkins Sr.’s house in Mobile. Her girlfriend Ally Hawkins is with her.
The twenty-three year old was celebrating Thanksgiving at the house in Mobile Thursday night, when her mother says her girlfriend’s brother attacked her for being gay.
Her accused attacker is 18-year-old Travis Hawkins Jr. He was arrested Sunday on the second degree assault charges. He bonded out soon after.
Thousands of people around the world have rallied online in support of Mallory Owens. Petitions have been signed to get the charges upgraded against Travis Hawkins Jr. to attempted murder.
But friends of Travis Hawkins have also fought back, saying this wasn’t a hate crime at all. They never got along.
Lawmakers have tried for years to cover gay and lesbians under the state hate crimes statute, but sexual orientation is not considered a hate crime in Alabama.
News 5 will be meeting with Hawkins’ attorney James Byrd Tuesday afternoon, and will bring you more information as it becomes available.

OMG. That is so sad. First off, you have no right in putting your hands on anybody. and secondly, why would dude hit on a woman like that? Just sad. I mad no one stepped up to help her. I would discontinue my relationship,if I were her. No point of fearing for my life from my own partner’s family.
What is wrong with people these days? This was very sad to read. Her being gay is not even the issue. How could a man beat a woman like this? He probably just kept hitting her over and over again. Sometimes I think that we are truly at the end of our days.

But for real, this is sad (and scary). People will still try to harm you (or kill you) because you are gay. Hell, I am BLACK and gay in a RED state….SMDH
