Early Sunday morning, Omar Mateen shot and killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, perpetrating the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Mateen, his father explained the next day, had repeatedly been angered by the sight of two men kissing. But according to witnesses, Mateen was also a regular at the club and exchanged messages with at least one gay man on a gay dating app.
“It’s the same guy,” Chris Callen, who performs under the name Kristina McLaughlin, told the Canadian Press. “He’s been going to this bar for at least three years.”
Ty Smith, who also goes by the name Aries, also said he’d seen Mateen being escorted drunk from the club, Pulse, on multiple occasions.
“(He’d get) really, really drunk… He couldn’t drink when he was at home—around his wife, or family. His father was really strict… He used to bitch about it,” Smith told the Canadian Press.
“Sometimes he would go over in the corner and sit and drink by himself, and other times he would get so drunk he was loud and belligerent,” Smith also explained to the Orlando Sentinel, which spoke with at least four clubgoers who remembered seeing Mateen at Pulse at least a dozen times. “We didn’t really talk to him a lot, but I remember him saying things about his dad at times… He told us he had a wife and child.”
Both Callen and Smith, who are married, tell the Canadian Press they stopped speaking to Mateen after he threatened them with a knife, apparently after someone made a joke about religion.
“He ended up pulling a knife,” Callen said. “He said if he ever messed with him again, you know how it’ll turn out.”
MSNBC host Chris Hayes also says he spoke to a man who claims both he and a friend received messages from Mateen via a gay dating app.

Kevin West said the shooter, 29-year-old Omar Mateen, contacted him three months ago through a dating app called Jack’d.
“When he first contacted me, he was saying things like, ‘What clubs are popping and things of that sort, what are good places to go?'” West said. “And I remember telling him, ‘Oh, you can just look it up online because I don’t go out that much.”
West said he didn’t think anything of it at the time. On Sunday morning, he said he met with FBI agents and showed them his communications with Mateen.

@Diggy…he was probably seeking love, and either didn’t get it or couldn’t accept it because of his religious background and his family. He lashed out, in the worst way imaginable. Instead of finding and having someone to talk to…in some sick twisted way he felt he needed to attack and try to kill as many of those he probably deemed an obstacle to happiness. Go figure.

His X wife was interviewed this evening on MSNBC..she said in effect that he was into the club life. They also interviewed several men who said they had contact with him and he wanted to have a relationship with them. He was on Grndr and other apps. One man also disclosed that he went to Police academy with him, and he the killer approached him, knowing that he was an out Gay cop and tried to have a relationship with him.
Wow! Did he actually hate LGBT? or was this more of a “self”-hate crime? It’s as if he didn’t hate gay people at all, but the system that oppressed him, and giving rise to his sexual frustration. He was around them all the time, he was trying to “fit in”, find a place where he belonged, but he knew he was an outsider; in the Muslim community,gay community, American (in general) community, he was just an outsider trying to find his place and never did, ultimately leading up to this. He was definitely trying to reach out to the gays, and foster relationships (maybe happiness?) but I don’t think he believed it could happen with his religious, family culture. I wonder what was going on in his mind at that moment. If all this is true, then I don’t know if I believe he “hated” gay people per se, but hated something bigger than just gay people. Perhaps that was his own dysfunctional logic of breaking free of that system. This whole story is just horrific.
That’s what has me confused as well. From what we know he seems like a closet case. He acted like he hated gays in front of certain people but he really had no problem with them and was gay himself.
I think the man was mentally ill. He has a past of getting violent over nothing and saying stupid shit. He read about ISIS and used that to “justify” the shooting in his delusional mind, when it was really internalized hatred.
Yes, and I believe this all stems from the fact that he felt basically ostracized from every community, he could have known of his sexuality from young, stemming his feelings og insecurity in the environment he grew up in. In his mind, he couldn’t truly belong to the Muslim community because he was gay, and couldn’t belong to the gay community because he held those same Muslim values= caught in the middle and fostering extremists beliefs over several years about ” human truths” and “freedom”.
It always comes down to the same principle: everybody needs love. He was seeking out love, (because he didn’t love himself) and didn’t get it, reinforcing his dysfunctional views of himself and sexuality in general, which ultimately gave rise to the abusive situations with his ex-wife (being forced to marry a woman in order to assimilate and belong to a group, but ended up suppressing himself in the process further fostering hatred.)
He was a cry for help, as they all are. He was confused, conflicted, and needed help. At least, that was my take on this. I might be reading too much into it though. I will continue to speculate about this because it’s important to have these discussions, especially in the LGBT community, trying to brush it off is pointless, fodder and just plain stupid, because this is life, and the world we are living in today. If we don’t start discussing these issues these things will continue to happen and everyone will continue to have :”???” over their heads, which gets us nowhere as a people. This guy was most likely “treatable” but was never treated, and I don’t think he was “crazy out of no-where” this was clearly a long time coming for him, and was never able to get the help he really needed.
I think the media is being reckless in reporting this shtt without tangible PROOF. And seeing someone’s photo on Grindr isn’t proof that it’s the actual person behind the profile. This is low rent gutter reporting and they need to stop! What difference would it make anyway if he was a DL self hating killer or just a heterosexual homophobe? Over 100 people lives have been adversely affected by this monster. Lets not get sidetracked with meaningless garbage.

I’m a Psychologist by profession with over 30 years practice.. trust there are many men living double lives because of cultural , family and social constraints. Having to live this facade takes a toll and some people Crack under the pressure.

From the articles I have read tonight at LA Times,Orlando Sentinel,Palmbeachpost,etc multiple men have come forward many of them have used their name.Also his lesbian neighbor has come forward saying he had no issues with her and her partner.Daily Beast interviewed his friend who is a drag queen.He was obviously struggling with his sexuality and his religion A guy on CNN says groups like ISIS are attractive to men struggling with their identity because the organization says it can rid people of sexual deviancy.One of the terrorist that carried out the Paris attack was spotted at gay hangouts.

Here is my theory. I think he was gay. Getting “angry” was his way of throwing off attention from himself. Similar to what we see with many homophobes. Considering his dad was very strict it was just another one of those programmed reactions he creates in order to stay in line with his father’s views.
Maybe this whole ISIS thing was a cover? Was he REALLY radicalized? Did he use the ISIS cover so he wouldn’t bring shame to his family? Is being a part of ISIS easier for some families to digest, than their child being gay?

There it is. So much nuance in this story. It is complex and multi layered. His sexuality, his religion, his alleged ties to ISIS (so far no REAL ties, just alleged inspiration), his racism (he had made racist statements in the past) when he targeted “latino night.”

An LA Times reporter was on Anderson Cooper show and said the guy who Omar had been talking to on Jack’d for almost a year saw Omar at Pulse saturday night.She said the guy named Kevin was dropping of a friend and recognized Omar from his profile pic.She said he knew Omar would go to Pulse because there is a way to see a persons location.Omar location would say downtown Orlando or something to that effect.I DK how Jack’d works does it give your location?
Doesn’t give EXACT location. But it will allow you to see who is logged in within FEET of you. Although, for safety, the app does allow you to adjust those settings to make you appear further away.
I’m not gonna lie, this guy could easily be mistaken for a Latino so and with the high Latino population he could easily blend in or be mistaken for somebody else. However, remeber that hatred is learned behavior. What type of household was he raised in? What did his parents teach him? Was it a ‘Love the man, hate the sin” type of foolishness?

There are people out there who are this crazy. I really don’t think he’s a closet case, I think his hatred for gay men was so deep he wanted to get into the inner workings and such. The fact that he’s been there so many times means that he knew how to get in you know ,when will it be the most packed. The moment he pulled a knife out on anyone he should have been on a do not let in list with pic and everything, some clubs don’t even allow you to wear hats and such so they can see your face before you enter.

You don’t need to go to a gay club 12 times over a three year period to scope it out.Why not go to one of the dozens of gay clubs closer to your house.He lived 2 hrs from Orlando.Also I read that Pulse is one of the smaller gay clubs in town and there are no signs indicating it was a gay club.So why did he choose Pulse.I always found it curious that in my high school the homophobic “straight” guys always seem to know where the gay clubs were.Some of them came out as gay years later.

Thanks for updating me, I figured ISIS was probably just taking credit. This just isn’t adding up right in my head. I’m assuming he went to Pulse because he didn’t want anyone back home to recognize him, but why go all the way there to shoot as well.

There was another person that was interviewed who said he (Mateen) was up in the club dancing before he started shooting. He said that when he saw the shooter’s picture afterwards, he was like that was the dude dancing not far from me.

I saw an interview on GMA or Today Show with a man who said Omar was at Pulse for hours drinking before the shooting.ISIS doesn’t approve of cigarettes or drinking.Also I watched the interview with the shooter’s father and he said his son wasn’t affiliated with ISIS because he didn’t have a beard.I googled ISIS terrorists and they all have beards.
