Your Family Could Be The Biggest Leeches Of Them All

imagine being drafted into the nfl.
you see your contract and you nearly pass out.
you are financially set for a while.
little did you know,
your family was plotting too.
welcome to the world of tyron smith

this is why i’m changing phones and addresses once my big break happens.
suddenly you have new family,
new friends,
new handouts,
and new enemies

We’ve talked a lot on here about the difficulty of assessing players’ on-field performance without really understanding what’s going on in their non-football lives. An example has come to light with regard to Dallas Cowboys second-year left tackle Tyron Smith, whose struggles this year switching from right tackle to left tackle have been nothing compared to what he’s apparently dealing with at home. Per the Dallas Morning News, citing a police report, the 21-year-old Smith’s siblings have been showing up at his home to “harass and torment” him “in the pursuit of collecting financial gain.” Smith has filed a protective order against his mother and his stepfather, and the order also prohibits contact through Smith’s three sisters and two brothers:

Smith, 6-5 and 308 pounds, is being represented by Dallas-based attorneys Royce West and John Schorsch.

“Lesser means were tried and they weren’t successful,” Schorsch said. “You can use your own imagination as to what it took for a guy that big and that imposing to be that worried.”

Schorsch said West filed the restraining order. West said, “I can’t shed any light without visiting with him first.”

Smith, who was the NFL’s youngest player last year, gave his family a substantial amount of money after signing a four-year, $12.5 million contract in July 2011, sources said, after he was drafted with the ninth overall pick out of the University of Southern California. However, family members keep coming back for more, sources said.

You’ve surely heard stories in the past of athletes who hit it big, financially, when they reach the professional level and have to deal with money and family problems as a result. It sounds as though Smith is going through something very difficult off the field and he continues to try and hone his craft on the field at the NFL level. The story says the Cowboys are aware of the problem and have “an organizational structure in place to help Smith avoid any incidents around the club,” so it’s clear that Smith and those around him are taking this all very seriously.

FOUND

on his own mother?
that is really sad.
but…

he is good.
real good.
after i gave them that money,
contracts would have been signed binding them from contacting me.
if they set foot on my property,
they would be shot and arrested.
run up on me of you want too.

i plays no games.

tyron,
i know they showed you red flags.
even family can fuck you over.

  1. It is great when an individual makes it to the professional ranks. Once the player has gotten their contracts and signed them like this young man did and gave his family a certain amount of money the should be happy and use what they are given in a correct manner and hopefully he the player want get stuck on stupid and marry some white girl who is looking at what she can get out of the deal after a few babies and she decides that she fedup!!! As African-American men in particular they need to watch that SHIT!!!!!!

  2. That’s a shame. I definitely want to take care of my mother & grandmother when I make it big, but they’re not gonna come at me on some extortion tip. And he gave them money!! You betta lay off him smh

    S/N: He’s pretty cut for a 6’5 300 pounder…

  3. Isn’t the point of being financially set to ensure you AND your family are set AS WELL? Perhaps I’m just the guy who values family, to each his own

  4. This is a damn shame, clearly though he has good advisers and people around him to try and protect his fortune. I guess he must have look at the ESPN special “Broke” and said that is not going to be me. These family members are pathetic leeches, so many people have the “get over” mentality. Get up off your lazy ass and work for what you want or make your dreams happen. Aint nobody taking none of those hits every Sunday for these young man. Family is the worse, hopefully someone can give him a copy of your entry about Fucks to give. Its sad that so many parents think that their kids owe them something for being brought into the world. I have seen this so many times in everyday families with one member who is doing good and the rest are crackheads, baby momma’s, or in and out of jail, and the parents expect the child who is doing good to bail these sorry m’f’s out all the time. So glad I was raised on the principle that you are responsible for you an no one else and you dont owe no one nothing but yourself. Stay Strong Tyron.
