the new ariel is definitely NOT what i expected

one of the fav disney movies is “the little mermaid“.
i remember being obsessed with this movie.
it was to the point i wanted to grow a tail and become a merman.
even though ariel” is pretty problematic,
this movie brings back a ton of memories for me.
on the wave of “live action/disney“,
they casted who “ariel” will be played by.
once it was announced,
you know “who” is currently having meltdowns as we font…

Singer-actress Halle Bailey will be part of Disney’s world.

Bailey, who with her sister forms R&B duo Chloe x Halle, has nabbed the starring role in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, and will play the role of Ariel, the rebellious daughter of King Triton who longs to live on dry land.

The decision was made today, with the budding actress notified later Wednesday morning.

Mermaid is casting up, with Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina in talks to star and lend their voices to other live-action and CG parts.

Rob Marshall is set to direct, after helming the studio’s sequel to Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Returns.

After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” said Marshall in a statement.

An early 2020 production start is being planned.

STAY.
MAD.
“they” are already having a fit all over social media.
( x black twitter is already calling it out )
omg…
imagine all those black merman that will be in that movie.
can i be in charge of that casting?

i hope they cast “prince eric” as a good lookin’ black wolf,
although,
i can see it going to someone white.
eh.
regardless of that,
i love that disney chose a beautiful black vixen to play this role.
i think halle has such a beautiful face and i love her voice.
she was the perfect choice to play “ariel” compared to zendaya,
who is killing it in “spiderman” and hbo’s “euphoria“.
chloexhalle showed their excitement on their instagram:

i hope she brings it for that role.

now that i font about it…
you know what this means foxhole?

Storm is about to get a better recast by Disney

what a time to be alive.

  1. Out of principle, I can’t support this…I don’t like it when they white-wash or use biracial people to play dark-skin black people, so I’m gonna keep the same energy here. Although I think they made the right choice since they were clearly considering a black/biracial woman to play this role from the get-go. Halle will do well, esp. when it comes to singing. I’m happy for her.

    1. Exactly. Uproar over a light skinned Storm. But all good over this casting? Nah

      And dabs to @hootie

    2. People shouldn’t get it twisted. Disney has been tweaking these characters for YEARS. If we’re going for super accuracy then Ariel shouldn’t be a redhead based on the original story and most if not all of these fairytales would be too gruesome for kids anyway.
People always try to say it’s the same when comparing so-called “black washing” to “white washing” when its not. A large chunk of the “white washing” done has involved characters who’s ethnic backgrounds are actually intertwined with the character or story themselves. Emma Stone playing a character based on a real Samoan woman in a movie that takes place in Hawaii IS “whitewashing”. A black actress playing a magical creature that collects things and lives under the sea is not ” blackwashing”.

  2. This movie is set in the Caribbean and filled with carribean inspired music, and the male lead (crab) was blac. Disney has been on a kick to have more racially appropriate casting. Look at Aladdin, and Mulan.

  3. It always made sense for Ariel to be black, to me. Sebastian had a Jamaican accent which made me think they’re somewhere in the Caribbean. In return Ariel should have had red locs and been a black girl.

    1. …literally only sebastian had the accent. The entire film was set in Europe.

Hell, why would sebastian even have an accent is the real question. Who would he pick it up from?

  4. White Hollywood has been casting white ppl for real black roles for decades. What’s the big deal this time. Halle is very pretty and has a great voice and the character isn’t real so…yeah. The salty white tears over a kids movie are delicious though. Ppl really do take this stuff too seriously. Halle better get that check!!!

  5. I’m being 100% honest. Disney is pandering, Yes Chloe is a great singer but if you watch “grown-ish” then yo know that acting needs SERIOUS WORK! They know the backlash they would’ve gotten if they casted white, not to mention she’s Beyoncé’s protégée. I really feel Ursula should’ve been casted black.

    1. Queen Latifa would’ve made a gud Ursula. But Made a would have totalled it. 😁😁

  6. Halle is an inspired choice and she’s going to slay the vocals. I believe her locs will be red as well, which… <3!

Reminder: Ariel is not real; she's half-mermaid for God sake, she doesn't have a race. If anyone is angry about Halle being in the live action film…go watch the animated one.

  7. They are going to make Prince Eric black it only fair if they going to cast Ariel black you must make Eric black I want to see black love in a Disney Princess movie not interracial love

  8. If we demand casting directors not white-wash black characters, i’m not okay with black-washing white characters and the frustration of “you know who” should be understandable as we’d be voicing the same frustration

    1. Okay but we have not been the face of everything commercial since television and film have been a thing. Do you know Disney only started making princesses of color because they ran out of stories to tell? not to mention Ariel is a fictional CREATURE this is not a biopic. Also she lives under the sea in the Caribbean with a Jamaican speaking crab as her bff I think she was supposed to be black originally buddy. white people are not oppressed so take your coon loving business elsewhere

      1. Ariel’s story doesn’t take place in the Caribbean. It’s danish. Same area as frozen.

        Only Sebastian is Caribbean

  9. Oops not so fast with that Storm business. I saw on Twitter that they might be looking at the actress who played Missandei in Game of Thrones. I’m so confused like they didn’t learn with Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp🙄
