the end of an “empire”

i stopped watching “empire” after the…
which one was the season when andre had the threesome with the ghost?
yeah,
whatever that one was.
i didn’t have the urgency to watch it again,
but i know a few of my friends and foxholers still enjoyed it.
well,
after news of “star” coming to an end next season,
“empire” has some news of it’s own…

The reign of Empire on Fox is coming to an end next year. Just two weeks after the Charlie Collier-run Fox Entertainment renewed Lee Daniels and Danny Strong’s hip hop drama for a sixth season and guided Jussie Smollett toward the exit door, it was announced Monday during Fox’s pre-upfront call that the self-described “groundbreaking cultural phenomenon” will be canceled once Season 6 is done next year.

“We are turning the final season into a large TV event — we are trying to go out guns a-blazing,” Collier said on the call of Empire‘s last season, which will be 20 episodes. “You allow fans to lean in and have the ending they deserve.”

Questioned about the possibility that the legally challenged Smollett could return for the final season, Collier dodged and replied with language reminiscent of last month’s press release. “There’s an option to have Jussie in the series but we have no plans for that,” he said, noting that the writers room for Season 6 hasn’t been opened yet.

damn.
it’s time tho.
it wouldn’t be the same without jussie anyway.
he’s one of the main characters.
jussie doesn’t even have to act since he’s executive producing “giants”.
if he plays his cards right,
he can be responsible for creating great content.
i don’t know if i’ll be tuning into their final season fully,
but i’ll check out if anyone dies or any good drama.
i’m sure they’ll all bounce back with new shows/movies.
i’ll make sure to follow their careers after the show ends.
andre,
especially.

lowkey: isn’t lee making a super hero show called “super bitch”?

  1. At least they’ll get syndication. TPH planned to leave once they hit that threshold.

I still think Lee’s being blacklisted by Fox/Disney though.

I also think Disney wants more wholesome a/k/a white programming on Fox. They’ll learn once ratings drop. Dumbasses in entertainment industry don’t realize that people in flyover states/Christian middle America watch Black shows. They’re obsessed with us.

    Your boy is sleep doe.

  2. Giants is a web series sweety that got a digital non watched cable distribution deal. Jussie is just EP in title. There is no money in that show which is why all the actors and James still live in the valley or Inglewood with Roommates.

  3. Hopefully Trai Byers goes on to have an amazing career. One of the best actors Ive seen in a long time.

  4. Crazy how Jussie single handedly ruined his career and played. Now that Empire is gone, those other cast mates have to find other recurring gigs.

  5. I still watch it every week. (Now it’s on break.) Jussie’s character’s on-screen marriage to his black husband (played by Toby Onwumere) was groundbreaking. Has any other primetime commercial broadcast channel TV show featured a black gay male marriage? (And show two black wolves kissing, getting in and out of bed, etc.) The show got silly a few seasons back, then started to rehit its stride, then kept bringing all these white people on, and flew off the rails. But ti’s still a good bit of camp every week. Jussie’s situation saddens me more than anything else, because I still have not heard enough about what brought him to the point of a psychic break and that stunt, if it was a stunt. But clearly something was going on. Meanwhile, Empire left its mark, and along with Star redeemed Lee Daniels’ directing and producing skills in my eyes.

  6. Oh well. Such is life in the entertainent industry. At least they get a series finale. Most black shows dont even get that and to be honest this show went down after season two anyway. Lee and the other writers lost focus. Way too many random cameos.

  7. *sighs*

I guess the show had ran it’s course. I stopped watching after season 2 or 3 because my hectic schedule just made it tedious to keep up with an hour long weekly musical drama. But I do remember when I would attend “watch parties” for the show with a bunch of enthusiastic people. We LOVED Empire in those early days. I was intrigued with Jamal’s storyline for obvious reasons. Not to mention Cookie & Lucious Lyon. Six seasons is a good run these days. They should be proud of what they accomplished.

  8. Terrance Howard said in the beginning he wasn’t going to be doing this show for that long. I could have sworn he stated 5 years max and then leave (logically for syndication reasons I guess). This show has completely went left in season two. That over the top “star studded” premiere turned me off from watching.

    1. ^when aun-t came down from the ceiling as a gorilla right????
that’s when i was giving it the side eye.

remember when that show was the shit to watch on a wednesday???
i can’t believe it went so left from that first epic season.

  9. Wow! I wasn’t expecting that at all it truly goes to show you how just one bad decision can have such a trickle down effect till it effects every thing in its path I really hope for the best for the entire cast especially the lesser known ones.

    1. Kelly, this had nothing to do with Jussie. They had already been renewed for two additonal season (5&6 just like Power) previously. Season 6 was going to be the end regardless, the are just trying to save face by using Jussie as the reason why its the last season (but he is still under contract)
