so lauryn hill allegedly stole “the miseducation of lauryn hill”?

 “the miseducation of lauryn hill”.
that is still a timeless album.
even as a cub,
listening to my uncle play it over and over,
i felt that it was something special.
“ex factor” still gives me chills to this day.
i didn’t really start to understand it until i grew up.
before i loved how it made me feel,
but now after going through so much,
i understand the feelings of what she is saying.
so when a foxholer sent me an interview with robert glasper,
on “979 the box”,
about how lauryn allegedly stole the music and didn’t give proper credit,
it left me rather…
sigh.
this is the interview

starts @ 27:20

“I’ve met Stevie Wonder and hung out with Stevie Wonder. I’ve met Quincy Jones and hung out with Quincy Jones. I’ve met Herbie Hancock; hung out with Herbie Hancock. If those three people can be cool, Lauryn Hill should be able to be cool. You haven’t done enough to be the way you are. You just have not. The one thing you did that was great, you didn’t do.

She took the credit for making the classic album. Those songs were written by other people, and they did not get their credit. She likes to take credit so she can become this super person. If you’re a super person and you’re that talented… do it!”

She couldn’t tune her guitar in rehearsal. We were in rehearsal, she had my boy Benji tune her guitar. She would come into rehearsal and say, “Benji, guitar.” And just hold it out like this. And he would run and tune her guitar.

that is sad to read.
it’s like finding out santa or the tooth fairy don’t exist.
catching your parents putting presents under the tree,
or the money under the pillow.
that feeling of disappointment.
i mean,
to his defense,
he isn’t lying on his account.
lauryn was sued in 1998 for song writing and production credit.
( x read about it here )
there is a paper trail that backs up his claims,
but i’m sure most of us don’t want to believe it.
i also believe the part about why she can’t make a sophomore album.

“she coming!”
“lauryn is back…”

… and nada.
we still waiting on it.
deep down,
i knew why tho.
she can’t top the success of the first one.
that album is a classic.
nothing she could release would be better.
she might have burned bridges and no one wants to work with her now too.
you see how late she is for her own concerts these days.
i’m talking 3 or 4 hours late.
like,
no.
i don’t know why folks even attempt to complain on social media.
i’ve come to accept all that is lauryn hill,
but that doesn’t take away from how iconic that album is.
even with all the bts drama being revealed,
that album will continue to define certain parts of my life.
i’m sure i’m not alone with that.

lowkey: that album really touched me.
i might have to let this drama slide the way some still cape for r kelly.

  1. Honestly, she should’ve never claimed she wrote the songs. Who cares? Artists rarely write most of their songs alone. It was her voice and beauty that captivated everyone.

I agree with Mikey. This is something I’m willing to over look. I mean BET is showing another whole damn 2 part Bobby Brown movie starring and slandering Whitney of course.

  2. I’ma say it now, I’m still playing the fuck out this album, it mofos can let homophobia and misogyny pass in hip hop, if womean beater can still play in the NFL, and if certain black people can still play R.Kelly ya gonna have to let me keep this one lol.

Don’t get me wrong it sucks that she wasn’t giving people their credit or money but…….. this is my favorite album of all time I’ma be ignorant on this one. Hey we all choose what and who we cancel as it matter of importance to us individually.

P.S. yes Lauryn mad amazing music before This album and even after. I love her Mtv live album because it was raw an just as real of a message as the first one. If a lot of those songs off there could be produced and digitally enhanced, I could have seen them being hits as well.

  3. I think a lot of people forgets that back before she had her own album she was part of the Fugees, and they had two great albums, she’s more than just that one album

  4. I never understand what these industry insiders mean when they say she didnt write the songs. Are they saying she just showed up and sang? Or are they saying she had help and didn’t credit anybody? I have copy of the album in my phone thru google play and I enjoy it still.

The story about her firing the band is cold blooded. People need their jobs and her just cutting folks pay is sooo fucked up. When you do things like that youre not only fucking with the person but also families who are relying on that check.

When did he mention a sophmore album from lauryn?

    1. When people say she didnt write the songs they mean she not only didnt write the songs, but didnt give credit to the songwriters which mean they didnt get paid nor did they get publishing for their work. This is the same thing that Quincy Jones revealed about Michael Jackson during the creation of Thriller. He was encouraged by Quincy to give credit to the writers but absolutely refused to do so. Can you imagine how much money and opportunities they were denied because of him. Lauryn as sued multiple times over song on TMOLH. Hell, look at her previous tax situations. She aint trying to pay nobody.

      1. I believe Human Nature was written by the guys from the group Toto. I didn’t find that out until years later.
