Oscar-winning actress and comedian Mo’Nique sued Netflix on Thursday, accusing the streaming giant of racial and gender discrimination by trying to drastically underpay her for a stand-up special after offering other stars tens of millions of dollars.
The suit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court accuses Netflix of giving a “biased, discriminatory” offer to Mo’Nique for a one-hour comedy special around November 2017.
In the 39-page filing, Mo’Nique calls out everyone from the top executives of the Netflix management team to highlighting the gender wage gap and lack of diversity in Hollywood.
“Despite Mo’Nique’s extensive résumé and documented history of comedic success, when Netflix presented her with an offer of employment for an exclusive stand-up comedy special, Netflix made a lowball offer that was only a fraction of what Netflix paid other (non-Black female) comedians,” according to the lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages and was filed on her behalf by attorneys at the deRubertis Law Firm, APC and Schimmel & Parks, APLC.
The comedian was offered $500,000 as a “talent fee,” an offer the lawsuit claims was significantly less than those offered to men and white women for the same type of stand-up original specials.
“When the talent was not a Black woman, Netflix offered to pay, and did pay, astronomically more than it pays to Black women like it offered to Mo’Nique,” the lawsuit said.

Wanda Sykes spoke about receiving a low offer from Netflix.Wanda said she didn’t take it personal she simply went to a rival outlet called Epix.Later on Netflix saw what Wanda did at Epix and came back calling this time with with a much better deal.Wanda said Neflix “moved a comma” so to me that means she must have either a 7 or 8 figure deal now.Wanda did a stand up special but she will be doing several projects including a scripted show.
When this first happened with Monique I said she should have gone to HBO,Showtime,Comedy Network produce a hit stand stand up special and everybody will come running.Unless Mo and Daddy(Sidney) have burned too many bridges with the BS they have been saying over the last few years.
Netflix have deals with Wanda,Tiffany Haddish,Shonda Rhimes,etc. it will be interesting if there is a trial and they have to testify about their experience with Netflix or the industry in general.Because I believe I read black women earn less than any other group in the industry.
There won’t be a trial because there isn’t a case. She isnt an employee of theirs. Their is no law that says Netflix has to offer so much money to Monique. What hurts her case further is how Netflix has been a platform supporting of black, female, and gay focused entertainment.

Monique has an Oscar…for acting not comedy. Maybe she should try acting again. Eddy Murphy was a stand up super star. If he had a stand up special millions would watch. Monique is not on that level. She’s talented but she isn’t popular. That’s what it’s all about. Who is popular enough to be a good investment for Netflix. They offered her little money, she said no thanks went on her way. That should be the end of it. Netflix didn’t break any laws.

Um…this is ridiculous. How is she going to sue them for not offering her more money? This is harsh, but let’s be real. Who is checking for Monique? Who is checking for Monique’s comedy. That is why she wasn’t offered a higher number. This is a business, and she isn’t a big draw. Why offer her a list pay when she won’t bring in an a list numbers.
Exactly, if she was that big a deal one of the other services would have offered her more money, but she’s not the draw she thinks she is. And if people were checkin for her, she could just do her own successful tour instead of spending 2 years yapping about this.
