The Baltimore mother caught on video repeatedly smacking her son after catching him throwing things at police during rioting in Baltimore told CBS News that she was only concerned about protecting him.

“He gave me eye contact. And at that point, you know, not even thinking about cameras or anything like that. That’s my only son and at the end of the day I don’t want him to be a Freddie Gray,” Toya Graham said, referencing the 25-year-old man who died after mysteriously sustaining severe spinal injuries in police custody earlier in the month. His death has sparked protests throughout the city, with tensions boiling over Monday.

Graham told CBS News she launched into action after spotting her 16-year-old son Michael wearing a hoodie and mask amid the protesters.

“At that point, I just lost it,” said Graham. “I was shocked, I was angry, because you never want to see your child out there doing that.”

Graham, a single mom with six children, denounced the vandalism and violence against police officers. She said rioting in Baltimore is no way to go about getting justice for Freddie Gray and that she doesn’t want that life for her son.

“There’s some days that I’ll shield him in the house just so he won’t go outside and I know that I can’t do that for the rest of my life,” said Graham. “I’m a no-tolerant mother. Everybody that knows me, know I don’t play that.”

It’s that reputation that made her son wince the second he saw her.

“He knew he was in trouble,” said Graham. “He said when ‘I seen you,’ he said, ‘ma, my instinct was to run.'”

Graham says after she got her son home they both watched news coverage of the demonstrations and riots on television. As images of her reaction started to go viral, Graham says comments started appearing on her son’s Facebook page, many in support of her.

“Friends and everybody making comments and saying you know, you shouldn’t be mad at your mother, you should give her a hug,” said Graham.

Graham hopes the incident will serve as a teachable moment for her son.

“And by him seeing everything what’s going on I just hope, I’m not sure, but I hope that he understands the seriousness of what was going on last night.”

  1. A good mother who is concern about her only son. He’s old enough to represent the male image in the household to his younger siblings. she does not want him to be a statistic in the future. The lack of parenting allowed the others who were out there doing what was wrong. After all good things did come out of that situation. Peer pressure can be hell on hands. He knew he was wrong!

  2. Can you imagine a white mother being celebrated on the front page of very newspaper in the developed world for, as she put it, “beating the shit out of” her son on television? Our culture will celebrate anyone who reaffirms its conviction that Blacks are subhumans who must be suppressed via violence. Anybody who thinks that an adolescent male who has been publicly emasculated is now LESS likely to go out and do stupid shit to reclaim his manhood isn’t paying attention. Supporting this ratchet hood rat ( single mother of 6) is the same as justifying police brutality against young Black men. The police do it because they also think that violence is the only way to control the animal nature of subhumans. Yes, I was beaten as a child and turned out OK. But, so was everybody in the penitentiary. I succeeded in spite of my mother’s embrace of the legacy of slavery, not because of it. ” I beat you so the white man won’t have to.” That is bullshit and its time for us to move beyond it.

    1. No, I can’t imagine a white mother being celebrated for disciplining her child, because I’ve never seen a white parent discipline their child. I HAVE seen the child disrespect the parent. So no, you probably never will see that. Instead you’ll see the child in the news because they killed the parent becuase the parent took away their phone or wouldn’t allow them access to the car…or whatever bullshit reason they decide to do it for.

That young black male was emasculated as you put it, because his mother cared about him. You may disagree with her methods, but he may VERY well go on to do better since he was disciplined on national, hell worldwide, television. A strong support system does miracles, dude. The fact that his mom cared enough to do that, speaks volumes. Do you think she gave a damn that the cameras were there, and that it was her intent to embarrass him on TV? I don’t. She was a mom that was concerned about her child doing something foolish. Hell, when I was young my mom called my friends to my bedroom window to listen to me get an ass whipping, because I got smart at the mouth with a neighbor. I got teased the next day, but we moved past the teasing fairly quickly and commenced to our games.

No one is celebrating her because she is a “subhuman” as you called it, she is being celebrated because she stepped up as a parent, which few will do, when her child was doing something he knew he should not have been involved with. Most would have made an excuse for that child’s behavior, she nipped it in the bud. Plain and simple.

If you REALLY think about it…I’m sure MANY people were questioning where were the parents anyway while watching that foolishness.

      1. So white children can be raised without violence but Black children can’t be? That might be the oldest belief in American culture. Those of us whose ancestors were bound, beaten and worked to death need to ask ourselves where the idea that respect is the result of applied violence comes from. If she had rolled up a newspaper and beaten a dog in public, she’d be in jail.

    2. Jay I wish I could give you a 1000 likes for your comments Bro, this is so true. I know its some shit when White America and the Fox news crew is getting behind this and keep embracing this, you have to be careful with the message it sends. They can now say, see their own parents have to beat them to get them to act right, so why is the Black community mad at the police for doing this. White America is forever demonizing single Black mothers as being parasites and bringing this country down, but now that she is on TV beating her child, she is a HERO-GTFOH with that Bull$hit. You can best believe if this was a white child and mother the narrative would be different from white people, calling her a bully and a monster in need of psychological help, but they dont care about Black children because they all see us as sub-humans worthy of abuse. I know her reaction was one of Love for her child but she went overboard, if the respect was there between them, she would have not had to hit him but once, and tell him to bring his little ass home and out of these streets.

      1. ITA,I have no issue with her going down there to get her son and telling him to take his as# home.I have an issue with her hitting him a dozen times in the head. She told him the night before to not go to the protest,to come straight home from school. If it’s ok to hit your child in the head when they disobey you, then why is it not OK for others to hit them when they disobey an order?

      2. Ok…here’s an idea. You see your child on television throwing bricks and other stones at POLICE OFFICERS, so you get in your car and you go down there and you find your child in a sea of other kids. You walk up to him and tell him, when you get home..you’re having a time out mister! GTFOH with THAT bullshit.

Yeah, she was a little overzealous with her hitting him, but you know what…it got the message across. You guys are worried about the mother hitting the child, and not the other kids looting and attacking the cops?! You are just as bad as the reporters on Fox news, trying to demonize a woman disciplining her child. Hell, they probably go home and get disrespected by their kids in every way, shape, or form. So THAT networks viewpoint of black people holds NO water with me. If it ain’t white..it ain’t right.

Whites do not believe in discipline, and that is why you have their children going into theaters killing people, or going into elementary schools and/or high schools killing other kids. Do I need to go on?! So should we care about their opinion of us? No we should not. Were it a mother that was beating her child for no reason, or because she was mad at the baby’s father, I would take issue with that. But this was a mother whose concern was for the welfare of her child, even though he was a teen, and if more parents (or subhumans as you say) took interest in their kids, those kids that were down there rioting, would have had their asses at home after school.

  3. I commend her actions as well. He’s out there carrying on acting like a damn fool with the rest of those idiots, and I’m sure that she probably taught him better than that. At least I would hope she did. If I saw my child on TV doing all of that destructive mess, I would snatch his/her ass up too! I don’t care who complains or who sees me doing that. You WILL NOT embarrass me like that when I work to put a roof over your head and clothes on your back. NOT gonna happen.

More parents need to be out there embarrassing their child like that. At least the child would think their parent gives a damn. Too many parents excuse their child’s behavior, and in this instance, there is NO excuse for it. Hell, you probably had some parents telling their child to bring them some items from that CVS they looted!

  4. I commend her for what she did. She did what I would do if that were my son. My mother always told us that better she bust out ass instead of the police.

  5. I’m glad a least one parent has some sense to go out and stop their child from participating in a ignorant form of protesting.

  6. Personally I don’t approve of hitting your child especially in the face and or head.I don’t approve of spanking children in general.

I guess I will go color my hair now to cover the gray hairs.I guess I don’t have black pride and I don’t believe #Blacklivesmatter since I don’t have virgin hair(natural).Oh well….
I guess guys who put texturizer on their hair lack black pride since they are chemically altering the texture of their hair.

    1. ^And your children will walk all over you, Colette. That “time-out” nonsense doesn’t work.

      1. That’s your opinion.Almost all my cousins who are in jail or prison were spanked, whipped, beaten, etc.Almost all of us who were not spanked have never been in trouble with the law.Every study that has been done shows that most men who are incarcerated for violent crimes report they were spanked, hit, whipped, etc as children. You may have turned out fine being whipped.Well many of us have turned out fine not being whipped. My grandparents poured hot sauce in my father’s mouth when he talked back to them.Yet they would never use that punishment to correct their great grandchildren or grandchildren today. When you know better, you should do better.

  7. If BLACK LIVES MATTER to her then she will have some pride and stop trying to look white with the colored hair.

    1. Y Colette you excuse all kinds of foolishness and so encourage all kinds of foolishness. Concerning African Americans thing won’t change for us unless we change. Your excusing all kinds of foolishness will not and cannot encourage the change needed.

      1. I feel the same way about your foolishness.
I can have Black pride with straight hair.
I can have Black pride with dyed light brown hair.
