“Get Out” Was Only Funny For The RaCoons

i found nothing amusing about “get out”.
i mean,
it had it’s moments when i laughed out loud,
but that movie took me through an emotional tailspin.
i didn’t sing any songs from it like it was “la la land” either.
well,
in this year’s golden globes,
“get out’ might be put under the “comedy/musical” category.
jordan peele,
the director,
says otherwise.
this is what “ew” had to say…

Is Get Out a comedy? Is it a documentary? For writer-director Jordan Peele, no matter what category his hit film is competing in at the Golden Globes, he doesn’t believe it can be “put into a genre box.”

The classification of Get Out has become a hot topic amid news that the film has been submitted as a comedy for the upcoming Golden Globe Awards. A source close to the Globes told EW that Blumhouse, which produced the Universal-released film, made the decision to classify it as such.

Get Out star Lil Rel Howery, who gives the film’s most comedic performance as Rod, reacted Tuesday on Twitter by writing:

Peele chimed in Wednesday morning, tweeting, “‘Get Out’ is a documentary.”

The filmmaker, who first made a name for himself with comedic work (MadTV, Key & Peele), elaborated on his stance in an interview with IndieWire. “The problem is, it’s not a movie that can really be put into a genre box,” he said, adding that it “subverts the idea of all genres.”

Peele said he originally intended to make a horror movie, but after screening it and hearing feedback, he settled on “social thriller.”

“What the movie is about is not funny,” he added. “I’ve had many black people come up to me and say, ‘Man, this is the movie we’ve been talking about for a while and you did it.’ That’s a very powerful thing. For that to be put in a smaller box than it deserves is where the controversy comes from.”

Call it what you want, but the movie is an expression of my truth, my experience, the experiences of a lot of black people, and minorities,” Peele told Indiewire. “The major point to identify here is that we don’t want our truth trivialized. The label of comedy is often a trivial thing. The real question is, what are you laughing at? Are you laughing at the horror, the suffering? Are you disregarding what’s real about this project? That’s why I said, yeah — it’s a documentary.”

it came off as a “horror/drama/thriller” to me.
“scream” was not a comedy,
but but it had “comedic undertones” to balance out the horror.
i look at “get out” in that way.
it scared the fuck outta me…
…but i can see how it can be a documentary too.
when i got home,
that movie had me doing homework with all the easter eggs in it.
hell,
i was doing investigations about it that week.
true story,
i was obsessed.
it’s disgusting they would place it as a comedy.
i kinda feel there is an obvious “easter egg” in that.

lowkey: “get out” is one of those i can only watch once.

  1. i wish jordan peele would just go away. his annoying ass. if get out is a documentary then why is he married to a white women. jordan whats really good? get out my face. hes annoying.

  2. I think Get Out wasn’t as good as it was made out to be. I was initially excited because it was like a black horror film but then I discovered it’s more like a stepping stone version to the movie the Skeleton Key. It does deserve creative merits tho.

Blacks need films in more catergories. Tired of being lumped in just drama and comedy as if that’s all we are good at being marketed for (oh and sports drama or comedy.) We need to dominate the fantasy and SciFi genres. Horror genre is iffy since most critics hate horror and usually low score it.

  3. I think it’s a smart move to put it in comedy category.I think it will possibly garner a nom for acting too.The comedy category is less competitive than the drama category. The studio probably did research and determined they could win in a comedy category.IMO they want a Golden Globe they don’t care if it’s for comedy/musical or drama.

Also I read when Jordan promoted the movie on the Ellen Show he called it a horror/comedy(dark).

  4. I still have not seen it. I had to prepare myself for it. I already know it’s going to have me in my feelz and I have to watch it and then watch something light after it.
