        African Americans (the descendants of African enslaved and brought to America) suffer from PTSD or PTSS–Post Traumatic Slavery Disorder or Post Traumatic Slavery Syndrome. (There is a large list and a complex of symptoms and some symptoms cause or aggravate other symptoms.) That’s what you get when you strip a people for 250 of their histories, names, cultures and heritages and subject them to chattel slavery and then subject them to Jim Crow for another 100 years. Give me a break. The problems in African American culture go back to slavery and Jim Crow and guess who imposed slavery and Jim Crow? Who taught African Amercians to use the N word? Who gave African Americans a slave mentality? Who gave African Americans a slave mentality, which is perpetuated generation after generation and which negative influences spread like a virus/disease? Who has denied African Americans jobs? (The best social program is a job!) Who has built and perpetuated a racially discriminatory penal-industrial complex which is tilted at every level–from arrest, to booking, to sentencing, to probation and parole–against African Americans? Who denied African Americans the nurturing and protective (as individuals and as a group) influences of their histories, cultures, languages, names and heritages? Why is it that African Americans largely hold as negative our skin, our lips, our noses and our hair and talk of “good hair” and make fun of dark complexions and strong/natural/nappy hair and fry and dye their hair unnatural colors like blonde, orange and red? (For example, see: Sheryl Underwood calls natural black hair ‘nasty,’ spurring Twitter backlash http://thegrio.com/2013/09/03/sheryl-underwood-calls-natural-black-hair-nasty-spurring-twitter-backlash/ ) (Witness Michael Jackson who famously said that “It don’t matter if you’re black or white.” What bunk! It must have mattered to him because he did everything possible to have white and not black hair, skin, lips and nose and he was successful in not having black children.) What do you expect if you do that to a people for 350 years? I expect a mess. And that’s what you have and now it’s time to blame the victim. And, by the way, I say “African Americans” because black people who come to America from the African Continent and from the Caribbean do better than African Americans who have been here for generations because they don’t have the burdensome legacy of slavery and they have the protective influences of their histories, cultures, languages and traditions. And, by the way, black immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean do better than other Americans too. For all other Americans–American Indians, Nigerian Americans, Irish Americans, Greek Americans, etc. coming to America has been a liberating experience and they immigrated to America. African Americans did not immigrate to America. They were imported to America and coming to America was an enslaving–not a liberating–experience. How soon we forget and perhaps not even learn! Who devised the “Southern Strategy” to make African Americans the political whipping boys of the country. Who carried out that “Southern Strategy” for decades—and some say still follow it? (And how about those Voter ID laws?) Who instituted “cointelpro” which purpose was to discredit, destroy, kill or jail legitimate African American political and social leaders who were not engaging in illegal acts and therefore which aim was to hobble African American leadership, communities and people? (Please Google “cointelpro”) Who sent Martin Luther King, Jr. a note to commit suicide, which purpose was to destroy legitimate African American leadership and therefore communities and people? Who instituted the “Tuskegee Experiment”? Try to itemize the list of racist, heinous and harmful things done to African Americans, which things have had their foreseeable and predictable effects. Who did these things? Not African Americans! Accordingly, trace the genesis of problems that African Americans have and “all roads” lead to slavery and Jim Crow! Don’t blame the victim!

        (And, by the way, the same or similar can be stated of Afro-Latinos [and for this purpose let’s include Brazil as a “Latino” country] in countries like Brazil, Cuba, Peru, Venezuela, Columbia, etc. The descendants of Africans that were enslaved and brought to those countries are at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder and have suffered and continue to suffer—similar to African Americans. PTSS is not peculiar to African Americans. It is the natural human reaction to centuries of degradation and abuse in the USA and South of the border–here and there. Again, persons of African descent who come here from Africa and the Caribbean do better than African Americans who have been here for generations. And, by the way, they also so better than other ethnic/racial groups. What’s the difference—centuries of degradation and abuse.)

        PTSS is but a diagnosis. What is the cure? PTSS is caused by slavery and Jim Crow striping a people of their history, cultures names, languages and heritages. An African value is that the young should honor and respect elders and that elders should nurture and protect the young. PTSS is the result of a people being striped of their history, cultures, names, languages and heritages for 250 years of slavery and another 100 years of Jim Crow without the nurturing and protective influences of history, cultures, names, languages and heritages whereby they continued to be terrorized and mistreated as second or perhaps 3rd, 4th of 5th class citizens. So the cure is to reverse what happened in Slavery and Jim Crow. Learning their histories, cultures, names, langueages and heritages. Stop using the N word. Stop adopting European standards of beauty. Stop adopting what white people do as the standard. Stop dying hair blonde, orange, red and other unnatural colors. Stop wearing weaves. Etc.

        If you’re not a part of the solution, then you’re part of the problem. The Hippocratic Oath is “First, do no harm.” So we have the cure: Be a part of the solution and not a part of the problem and do no harm. Few behaviors or actions are neutral. They ether help toward a goal or they work against the goal. The song said it well, “Accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative.” A few things: Don’t use the N word and call out and chastise those who do. Get it removed from music and music videos. Don’t use terms such as “good hair.” Don’t excuse such poor behavior. Strive to eliminate it in you and in others that you touch. Strive for excellence and the highest standards of achievement! Seek common ground with other people who will pledge to behave positively. Don’t say or do such things as “I used a black [doctor, lawyer, carpenter, etc.] and he wasn’t any good so I’ll never use another black [doctor, lawyer, carpenter, etc.] again. That’s negative, particularly when black people will use a white or other [doctor, lawyer, carpenter, etc] and if dissatisfied will go on to the next white or other [doctor, lawyer, carpenter, etc]. Black people are signified by their dark skin, broad noses, full lips and strong hair. Don’t use negative terms to refer to such characteristics. Don’t put light skin, pointy noses, thin lips or stringy hair above black features. Each one teach one. Each one reach one. Open your eyes to the facts of PTSS, including wearing of weaves, dying hair orange, red, blonde and platinum—all unnatural colors for blacks but natural for whites. Realize that love is love but that many blacks are so enthralled with white beauty (which they make the standard) that they in their slave mentality (a symptom of PTSS) are “naturally” drawn to white women and men (with, for example, blonde hair and blue or “light” eyes) and that they are “naturally” repulsed by “ugly” or “lesser” black women and men with their dark skin, strong hair, broad nose and full lips. Understand much of that as a form of self-hatred and self-loathing. Instead of going to Europe for your vacation where you have no cousins, go to Africa. And go to West and Southwest Africa where the ancestors to African Slaves come from—as far North as Senegal and as far South as Angola—so that you will get in-touch with your ancestors and your culture and your identity as an African American. (Many African Americans make their overseas trips to Europe just like their white co-workers and neighbors but they have ancestors in Europe. And what makes African Americans African Americans is their ancestors and current relatives—cousins—in Africa.) Understand poor behavior that reeks of mental slavery—but don’t excuse it! And don’t blame the victim.

        We must understand that such behavior is both a symptom of PTSS and a cause of PTSS. Such behaviors, attitudes and actions are contagious like the most dangerous of viruses. And they are spread person to person and generation to generation.

        Are you familiar with the “the doll experiment by Dr. Kenneth Clark”. If not, Google it and articles associated with it. The doll test/experiment was done after the year 2000 and the results are the same. There is a great amount of self-hate and self-loathing among African Americans and this seeps into children from societal cues in TV, radio, music videos, parents and even comments with the N word, etc. As is bent the twig so grows the mighty oak. Parody/ridicule: Yes, children are to blame because they didn’t chose the right parents!

        ++++

        The first step in solving a problem is realizing that you have a problem. PTSS is a problem. African Americans didn’t cause it, but are 100% responsible for curing it because it hurts them. PTSS is a diagnosis. The cure is to reverse the process that produced it. Unfortunately you can see if a person has a broken or missing leg but you cannot see a if a person has a broken mind, spirit, culture, etc. And it is very hard to repair a those things because many people don’t know that they are “ill”.

        For example, many African Americans would deny that they are “ill” and insists on using the N word. Many African American women insist on dying their hair orange, blonde, etc. Many African Americans talk of “good hair”, etc. They are “ill” and spread the “disease” of PTSS but they would and do deny that they are ill or that they spread anything negative. They have broken minds and transmit a broken culture but they–like an alcoholic or drug addict—refuse to do much to be cured! And such behavior is part of the disease process!

        ++++++++

        Yes, you have a choice. You chose to be negative and spread negativity by using the N word. You see a speck in other’s eyes but you don’t see the log in your own eye. You’re either a part of the solution or you’re a part of the problem. You’re a part of the problem. Take the Hippocratic Oath: “First do no harm.” You’re doing harm by the use of the N word and by blaming the victim. Understand the victim. Help the victim. Teach the victim.

        Yes, the question is what to do in the future? If you understand that past, you can work to remedy it. An African value is that children should honor and respect elders and that elders should nurture and protect the young. Well, do that! Know your history. Honor it. Don’t use the N word. Each one teach one. You’re either a part of the solution or you’re a part of the problem. First do no harm. Don’t blame the victim. Etc.
