Some believe atmosphere is safe for gay NFL player to come out

Former NFL player Scott Fujita has seen enough. He’s tired of the bigotry. He wants it to end. He’s not alone.

Players like Fujita, along with a coalition of current and former NFL players, and NFL team owners, a music mogul and others, are working diligently to create a safe atmosphere for the day history will happen: when an openly gay man will be a member of an NFL club. People like Fujita — brave people — are attempting to make the issue a non-issue for when that day comes.

And there are serious indications that day may come sooner than later. While I’ve long believed I would not see an openly gay NFL player for decades, that might be wrong.

Based on interviews over the past several weeks with current and former players, I’m told that a current gay NFL player is strongly considering coming out publicly within the next few months — and after doing so, the player would attempt to continue his career.

I’m told this player feels the time is now for someone to take this step — despite homophobic remarks from San Francisco 49ers defensive back Chris Culliver and the controversy arising recently at the Indianapolis Scouting combine, when prospects were asked questions about their sexuality.

This player’s true concern, I’m told, is not the reaction inside an NFL locker room but outside of it. The player fears he will suffer serious harm from homophobic fans, and that is the only thing preventing him from coming out. My sources will not say who this alleged player is.

There has never been an active openly gay player in a major American team sport, but the information I’ve gathered on the player in question comes from several current and former players.

do we care about celebs “coming out” anymore?
is this still big news?
are we looking forward for the press conference,
 book deal,
and blog story?
will this cause straight people to come out their privacy?
what will this do exactly?
just asking…

  1. Truly it wouldn’t be that big of a issue. Cause believe it or not lots of players come out after there career is over so what’s the big deal if one comes out durring there career. I’m sure it’s going to get blown up when it starts but then somthing else will happen and it’s over. S/N I hope is Laron Landry

  2. I just hope it is either Mark Sanchez, Mychal Kendricks, or Tim Tebow who do come out. I think it might be Tim Tebow since he is so concerned about what the fans might think.

  3. Yes this will help tremendously. Every time one of us comes out a youngster somewhere learns that he/she is not alone, is not the only one.

Gay youth commit suicide four times the rate of straight youth out of the fear and stress from society. And, a third of those who reach adulthood have substance abuse issues out of the stress experienced. (I’m including alcohol and cigarettes along with the other stuff.)

Many of the people outside the Supreme Court today are straight allies who are simply decent people and people who are there in support because they are standing up for their gay family members and loved ones.

Senator Rob Portman of Ohio, a longtime staunch opponent of gay equality, is now supporting marriage equality because his son is out. As more and more people realize their own family members and favorite co-workers, next door neighbors, team members who have their backs are gay society changes. This is a major reason the President was able to take the stand he took and not suffer consequences.

One irony, however, is that many of us who are out and black and live among our people are not able to have more impact because people are so focused on the stereotypes they don’t recognize us. Many think being out means one has to wear a button, hang a flag or put a bumper sticker on the car. It does not. It simply means being oneself. Thing is, if one is masculine and doesn’t fit the stereotype, many young people who could have us as role models don’t know who we are and that we are in their midst.

Therefore, since media cover celebrities such as athletes and entertainers, when a NFL player or entertainer who is not wild or eccentric comes out, the impact is great because another hole has been blown in the stereotype.

After all this time, I am still amazed that gay brothers who should have gadar think I’m straight and have to gingerly try to cruise me and that women will still make passes when that is not even my focus.

  4. It will probably help other LGB athletes at all levels and probably parents who may have LGB kids, and maybe even some homophobe might change their minds about who or what a gay man looks/acts like but outside of that no one sane really cares.

Same people are gonna be discreet.

Same people are gonna be on the DL.

Same people will lie about who they really are to themselves, families, and congregations.

Same people will be out and proud and continue to put gas in their cars, go to work, and duck Sallie Mae calls cause you know they will be asking about their private student loan money after you told they ass you don’t have it after the last fifteen calls on the hour, every hour!

Pretty much life will go on.

Whoever it is will be important for a moment, but not really that important in the bigger scheme of things. There have always been gay/bi men in sports, his acknowledgment will be notable but not earth shattering. Comparisons to Jackie Robinson will not be warranted.

It’s a sad that the highest court in the land is actually debating the constitutionality of whether two people who have the same biological sex can be grown and handle their own business, nationwide, in 2013!

  5. Ooooooo skiddes like a little kid in excitement ….side note Jamari since you don’t know how to ask your fav wolf youngin how his day is.. I stopped at the gas station of a hood I used to live in, came out and this guy saw me in my nalia and asked me if I was in the navy…like how do u make that connection? Some guy there ( I’m so over thuggishness tho) volunteers to explain ….umm k

  6. I hope that he chooses to come out so he can pave the way for other active players and the ones who are up and coming. Now the public’s response will depend on how he looks, how big of a star he is, and how he is when he is off the field. I am dead serious.

Do NOT get your hopes up guys. I highly doubt this guy is black and fine. He is not black period. It’s a white guy. Watch what I tell you.

    1. Kordell is to arrogant and self centered, no one cares what he does or thinks. His “skills” were in demand back in the late 90s and early 2000s but now he is just a closet queen trying to impress the young ones like Eddie Long and Thadeuss Works try.

  7. You know I ALMOST sent you this story…I thought you wouldn’t be interested….what crack I was smoking?

in reference to the story, I thought Kordell Stewart was finally going to come out since he is divorcing Porsha but they said the baller was still active in the game..

what you think about that divorce mess anyway?

    1. ^i gotta post about those two.
i was on the fence with him.
he came off like an old queen to me.
      i don’t know how she couldn’t tell.
he was really controlling towards her and treated her like a child.
the way how he divorced her and didn’t even tell her was FUCKED UP!
i think she may have signed a confidentiality agreement to bar her talking shit lol

      1. I don’t watch the show but I saw snippets and I could see him being controlling. Either he got a small dick or he is gay (or both). She don’t need his ass anyway. I hope she get half of everything AND she tell all!

      2. I wanted to like Kordell but I just couldn’t. He ain’t shit, and he wasn’t much of nothing when he played either. That dude is a controlling ass queen who is only good for TV.

I’d cuff Porsha, and would not use her as a beard. I think she is a cutie and a good woman. She is not the smartest woman but she is not bad at all.

      3. Think about it ….. what straight man do you know in his 40s that goes shopping at the mall alone? And at a Mall 30 miles from his house? That should have been your clue right there.

    2. Did you see Kordell and a quick glimspe his tailor on one of those episodes measuring around Kordells dick. Dude was ja fine, I bet he giving the pipe to his tailor, dude was fine
